Title: Newbie from Devon, advice required! :)
Post by: boogs22 on August 12, 2014, 12:39:08 pm
Good afternoon all,

I'm currently looking to rent or potentially buy a smallholding in South Devon, preferably in the vicinity of Newton Abbot but I'm not having much luck finding anything...  :-\ Does anyone know of a good website that advertises smallholdings or where I might best direct my search efforts?

Many thanks,
Tom

Try uklandandfarms, uklanddirectory, rightmove, savills, plenty of groups and pages on facebook that possibly have land, even try sheepkeep   :fc:

Welcome and good luck.

I suspect your best bet may be to drive around and see whose For Sale boards are up on the right sort of properties, and then keep tabs on those agents.  Personally I'd ring the top three every week or two or three; some properties may not make it to the internet ;) - and if they remember you (because you called recently) they just might give you a call when something comes in that may suit you ;)

Modified to add - oh, and get the local newspaper (mailed to you if you are out of the area) - the one(s) which have the best selection of the sort of property you are after.  That will help identify the right agents to be keeping in touch with, too, as well as letting you know what's on the market at the mo.

We got our smallholding through Stags estate agents (South Somerset but we looked at loads in Devon too). Stags and GTH are the biggies but there are a lot of others too. Make sure you ring / email them with your requirements and they will send you property updates. We made the journey down from South Yorkshire every time anything came up (we bought ours a year ago) as we found we needed to move quickly or miss out. The brochures naturally don't show the negatives so we often found the properties we liked weren't the ones we thought we would like best, so keep an open mind and be prepared to see properties you wouldn't choose from the internet alone. Good luck!
