Title: Flail mower / topper?
Post by: StephenRoberts on July 29, 2014, 02:29:39 pm
I am currently using a 90cm flail mower attached to a little Kubota (15hp). I may have the opportunity soon to upgrade, I'd like to have a 1.5m cut if possible with an adequately powerful tractor to power it. I'd welcome the input from forumland as to the pros and cons of either flail mower or a topper. I have about 5000 sq metres of orchard which is mostly ratty grass with a few molehills. The current flail just ploughs straight through the molehills but does not like long wet grass, especially when there are lots of windfalls on the ground.

Can a topper cope with molehills?

Well, yes it can, provided it's fitted with a slip clutch, otherwise be prepared to be replacing shear bolts fairly frequently.
