Title: Heavy laden plum tree
Post by: Lesley Silvester on June 16, 2014, 11:33:03 pm
My rather spindly Victoria plum has so much fruit that the main branch was almost touching the ground. I managed to prop it up on a piece of wood to reduce the risk of it breaking but is there anything else I can do? I don't want to take any of the fruit off if I can help it.

I was told to reduce a few of the fruit last year and didn't - now have a damaged branch from the excess weight and a potential route for silverleaf infection and other diseases :(

What you could do as an interim measure is take out half the length of this year's shoots midsummer, reduce the volume of non-fruitbearing parts, and meantime make more permanent branch supports along the length?

Ha ha!  Glad someone else treats their fruit the same way as me!  Hate having to take any fruit off, which lead me last year to two broken boughs still laden with fruit, in fact, I never did get round to taking them off, even after fruiting last year, and they are again laden even with the breaks!  I must do it...erm...sometime...

My neighbour who has lots of fruit trees said that it's because I let the tree get too tall and leggy. That's because I dont know how to prune it.
