Title: GLASGOW Meeting on Monday 7th December
Post by: Snoopy on October 13, 2009, 04:57:05 pm
Hello all

As some of  you know I am visiting Scotland between 4th and 8th December,  as a treat for finishing my three year studies in Social Science. ;D ;D ;D

I am hoping to meet a lot of Scottish TAS Members in Glasgow on Monday 7th December at around 12.30 - 1.00pm.

As most of you will be travelling in by train on the day, I need some ideas of hotels with nice big lounges, or even food hall/cafe area in a shopping centre, where we could all meet up, and eat or drink if we wish to, but will have enough room for us all to sit and chat for an hour or three  ;D ;D ;D.

I haven't been to Glasgow for 16 years so am out of touch  ::) and would love to firm up some arrangements before the Christmas Lunch rush.

All are welcome to join and the more the merrier - if you can make it - put the date in your diary now and PM me, then at least we may know how many chairs we will need on the day  ;D ;D ;D

I know Happy Hippy, FluffyWelshsheep and baby, Sandy, annie, Marigold, cmorrel, and a good few others wish to make it - and I am getting really excited at the prospect of meeting you all - and taking some photos of lots of TAS members together ;D ;D ;D

PS  Hope "JD" can make it as you live in the town  ;D ;DPPS - Where's Annie - she has not posted for a while ???

I'm coming  ;D ;D ;D
I know that The Copthorne Hotel is in George's square quite close to the train stations (central & queen street) but there are loads of places !
Here's a wee taster !

Quite a selection ! Personally I'm fine with anything  ;D (don't want any budget breakers that close to Xmas though)

Just found St. Enoch's Shopping Centre, says it has 850 seats in a Food Hall - looks a nice place on the web site - Europe's biggest glass building - wow...

Is it a good place for us all to meet?

Julie

PS Just noticed that Annie is on hols in Wales - hope she's back soon.

PPS How is James - are you out of hospital and have you got this date in your diary James as my Pygmy Goats say I have to meet you  ;D ;D ;D

It's a food hall in the shopping centre - lots of fast food type stuff, McDonalds, Baked tatties, pizza, sandwiches etc etc - but lots of room. There's also the Buchanan galleries shopping centre - it's nicer than st enochs (IMHO) I'm pretty sure it's got a food hall too - I've not been out in town for years ! I'll have to check with my sis  ;)

Yes its near xmas for budgets - which is why I thought that the food hall in the shopping centre would be good - we can all buy what we can afford, or just have a natter ;D ???  Also it should be quieter on a Monday than on other days, hopefully.

I am hoping to do a bit of xmas shopping - any craft fairs on on the 7th and 8th in Glasgow, or nice places to buy
stuff for a 11 year old girly girl into horses - let me know ;D ;D ;D

LOL !  ;D ;D ;D
Glasgow city centre, 18 days before Xmas - quiet  :o you're kidding - aren't you ?  ;D
There is a Christmas craft fair, but it's on the 19th unfortunately.
Millers art shop is a good place for crafty stuff to keep her happy or there's a huge big hobbycraft (it's out at Glasgow Fort in Easterhouse though, so you'd need to drive or taxi there) There are lots of wee independant shops selling unusual stuff but most of them tend to be in the west end - Great Western Road, Byres Rd area. The city centre is mostly big chains as they're the only ones who can afford the rent! St Enoch is all standard high street shops, Buchanan galleries does have one or two different ones, my fave's the bear factory (just cos I can make bears with personalised (and / or rude) recorded messages for peeps ;))

I'd like to throw the suggestion of Doocot on level 5 of The Lighthouse into the suggestion box. Friendly staff, not bad pricing and pretty good food. Nice casual atmosphere with no problem moving tables together etc (I hold a weekly tech/creative meeting there).
Title: Re: GLASGOW Meeting on Monday 7th December
Post by: Snoopy on October 14, 2009, 01:18:35 am
The Lighthouse sounds ideal - but not everyone may wish to buy a meal etc. will they mind us taking seats up if we are not all spending - how does it work when having meetings?  Do you hire the room?  Or is it always available?
How far walking distance would it be from the Train Station that Central Scotlands trains land at??

Sorry for the technical turns like land at etc, but all I know is that I'm coming in from Dunoon and its a different station, but within 10 minutes of the other station  ??? ::)
- need to get myself some names of stations and a map dont I - wheres my friend Nancy  ::)when I need her... she will have to get a couple of herb plants  ;Dalong with her pet dog  ;Dso she can become a TAsser :o, she doesnt have room or time for hens etc. ;D ;D ;D  She is intrigued that I suddenly know so many people in Scotland - he he he

There's no problem just having a coffee or indeed nothing at all.. the meetings I run are very informal and people range from buying nothing to full meal. No rental and no booking required.. just turn up and take a table or tables and move them together.

It sits between Central Station and Queen Street Station, the two that people would be arriving at and is only a few minutes walk from either.

Here's their website and there's a menu with pricing on it: http://www.doocot.co.uk/

I can see why you have meeting there - it looks ideal.

They are offering a Christmas Menu though so we will have to check nearer the time if they will be too busy.
Pleased you are busy - keep up the good work and good luck with your plans etc.

I am thinking that The Copthorne - suggested by HappyHippy, and The Millennium Hotel which I have just been in touch with is the same place. ::)

It seems ideal to meet here, either in "The Millenium Lounge" or Georges Bar, both of which have a coservatory overlooking St. Georges Square which will have ice skating on the day, and also christmas lights and other entertainment. ;D ;D ;D

May even ask ryanair if I can bring my ice skating boots free - no triple salcoes though, the last one I did was down the stairs and that nearly killed me (http://www.smileys4me.com/getsmiley.php?show=2134)

Getting giddy now  ::) ;D

I hope you can make it too Sandy - its a Monday, so your OH may let you have
a few hours away, and stand in for you - hopefully, as I am really looking forward to meeting you ;D ;D ;D

The Copethorn/Millenium Hotel holds fond memories of excessive cocktails at their happy hours as a student  ;) But it's a good spot & near enough to both Central and Queen street stations to be easily accessable. It gets my vote  ;D
I'll not be joining in with any ice skating though, my centre of gravity is too low and I keep falling down  ::) (that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it  ;))
OOooo getting so excited now, can't wait to meet everyone. It's funny how you can build friendships with people and feel like you really know them without ever having met. Like Julie says, it'll be lovely to put faces and voices to names. The date's in my diary, I'll talk to the childminder and see if she can take Connor for the day, that way I may even be able to come in on the train and enjoy a wee bit of festive cheer without having to stay sober and drive  ;)
See you all soon I hope  :-*

Me and robin are coming in on that day, not sure about getting a pram (might put him in the carrier if easier depending if he's a fat lump then lol)on the train but if sandy and annie are getting on the train (at alloa) am sure they help me out. Not sure about money (the amount thats is ) for presents this year so might just be window shopping for me.

Hi Julie, thanks for the invite I will try and get along to say hello to everyone. Karen and Calum have made good suggestions for places to meet. There is a pub on the corner of George Square and St Vincent Street called the Counting  House which is very reasonably priced for drinks and pub grub and it is very spacious.
If you are travelling from Dunoon, ferry and train, you will come into Central station which is 5 mins walk from George Sq.

I'm coming and would also like somewhere that we can go for the price of a coffee.
I heard that the Lighthouse has just gone bust which will mean that the doocot is out.
Does anyone know what the cafe at the Gallery of Modern Art is like?
http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=3
 (http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=3)
It's right outside Queen's st station and gallery cafes are often quiet when shops are busy.

The cafe is in the basement and shares the space with the gift shop. It's tight for space especially if there are quite a few meeting.

The Lighthouse is operating under administration and will remain open until January when the administrators, council and other relevant parties will make a decision on its viability. Doocot is a privately owned cafe renting the space and remains a profitable going concern. There would be no issue using Doocot for the meet, although I'm perhaps noting a preference for elsewhere for other reasons.

Does everyone have a TAS badge?  I think Dan still has some - and they're free.  If we all wear our badges we won't have to go up to everyone else and look stupid when they say 'wt * is TAS?' ;D ;D ;D

That's good news, my vote is for the Lighthouse then, Its close to both stations and has a lift for prams etc and is usually quiet

Hi Callum,
The Lighthouse will suit me (I'm not fit enough to ice skate at the moment - just a dream ;D -
Was worried about how far it was to walk for Sandy and Annie - but if its nearby Queen St Station then lets meet there - easier for Linz and looks a great place.
Shall we say 12-45-1.00.

I will hopefully be there for two to three hours depending on my train back to Dunoon.

So will wait to meet whoever can make it - should be great.
I'm not flying home that evening now, going back to Dunoon, and flying home the next evening to be at Prestwick for 7pm. Saves me having to bring my luggage to the meeting too ;D ;D

Will ask Pretty Please to get my work covered that day and hopefully both Jonners and I can come and play too.  The only badge I have is one that says "I need hassle like a guinea-pig needs a fish-slice" ................don't spose that's appropriate!  It's a long story - probably had to be there!! No preference as to venue - will be so good to meet up with you guys. Well done Snoopy for getting the ball rollin'.  Til soon. N

Well its only 5 1/2 weeks away now. :o ;D ;D

My exam arrives on Monday, so will have my head down for three weeks to complete it.

I notice Callum is busy studying too - must be the time of year for it.

Callum, if you get a chance, could you draw a simple map of how to get from Queens Street Station to the Lighthouse, and post it on here??  Please  :bouquet:

Linz might put a little counter on to count the days down - I have no idea how to do that ??? ::)  ;D

I've generated a simpler version which will take you to the right place :D

This assumes you're leaving Queen Street Station by the MAIN entrance with is the set of doors in the middle of the hall beside Burger King. The Lighthouse is down a tiny little narrow lane .. so make sure you're walking down the right hand side of Buchanan Street and note it's the first narrow lane after you pass Borders. There's an O2 store shortly before the lane.

I promise I'm not compensating for anything ... you should see the size of my lenses!

Google is actually slightly wrong .. it suggests the entrance to the lighthouse is around the corner, but it's actually where it shows Bar Soba. Right beside it in fact.

Put all the names in a hat/bag/thing and draw out 1 no 2 gives to no 1 no 3 gives to no 2 and so on until we run out and then no 1 gives to the last person.
That way we can all have fun trying to find something for someone we can name??????????????

One of my colleagues at work loves doing this sort of thing. I could ask her to organise it and then no one person would know the bigger picture?

We now have another guest booked in until 3rd Dec!!!! so, depending on who books I may or may not get out! It's not all about getting them out, you have to make beds and clean and if people are checking in and out, it takes a bit of time to turn over the rooms.....10.00am is far too early to send guests out..we have had some wounderful people who occasionaly want to either come back to change into warmer stuff, drop stuff off or on the odd occasion, they may be a little unwell so it's best for me to be either fairly nearby or only out for 2-3 hours at a time...remember, it is my job and I have more free time doing this than I ever did when I worked!!! I love it, when guests are in I can do what I like, even walk around in my PJ's ;) ;) ;)Now where else can you have too much to drink, look rough, and still be earning money????

No offence intended, Sandy, you know me well enough for that - I just think it's a pity you might not be able to come with us.  I understand about it being your job - I am business woman after all.

Not offended at all!!!! ;D ;D just tought I would add, we moved so I could at least enjoy life...we both used to work, come home, have our tea and watch a bit of TV and go to bed..at the weekend, clean, shop and visit my family...loved the family thing but otherwise no time to enjoy the beauty spot we lived in. I love cleaning etc and at least have a bit more time off.....Not at all offended...this job is great

That's the later train anyway,  I was thinking of coming back on the 3.18 - it only takes 2 mins longer.  Have to get home to feed pups around 4.30 pm as they'll be fed early to catch the outward train.

Fingers crossed I hope to come BUT we kep getting bookings..If we only have workmen in then that is fine...I can leave them as they go out of the house before 7 am and back after 6.00, except one, who will  bed on night shifts, but they are great and can be trused!!!!! I will go on the train as it is by far easier...WHen I worked in Glasgow I knew all the parking places but you can get mixed up and parking can be expensive, I had a cheapo car so parked it on the road next to local tube stations!!!

I'm just opposite Ireland!

You need to go up loch lomond, Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Tarbert then Clachan. It's only about 120 miles but buses need to stop and obey the speed limits!!

Had it been summer, I would have made the journey, and been able to leave the livestock .....could have stayed with my family in Cambuslang, which is not far from Glasgow, as you will all know.

Hello - Sorry I have been a bit of a stranger this week - three more essays to complete and then
I have completed this exam.

REally looking forward to my trip to Scotland which begins next Thursday.

I hope to be at the Doocot at 12.30, and as the last bus back to Dunoon doesnt leave until 6.30pm, I can stay
there for two or three hours to meet everyone, and still get in a couple of hours shopping before the bus journey
back via the ferry to Dunoon.

We have decided to get the bus as it is 15 quid each, so 30.00 all in, and includes the ferry, and of course no parking
no hassle driving, and it only takes 1- 1 1/2 hours so that gives me and Nancy three hours chat time   ;D  he he he

PLUS We can have a little toddy or wine too, cos we are not driving  ;D

CANNOT WAIT - SEE YOU ALL SOON - How about us all making ourselves a little

big badge with our TAS Handles on
so that we can recognise each other and not forget the names to the faces -
say A5 size with our logos and names on -

i.e. Snoopy - and my dog logo
Sandy and her VW logo
etc etc

What do you think???  Its gonna be great with all the accents and faces, trying to remember the true names as well as the TAS names ::) :o ;D ;D ;D ;D[/s]

I will be getting on the same train at Lenzie... but not sure which time yet. If I remember, I'll print out a sign saying simply TAS and stick it in plain view of the entrance to Doocot so people can find the table easily if they don't recognise anyone.

Not gonna make it to Glasgow on Monday.  Tomorrow is Kelso Races - busy with the taxis til stupid o'clock Monday morning - then school contracts which I couldnt get covered and then surgery Tuesday morning - giving up on this damn collar-bone - 2 ops later, 20 months later, - still got broken bone but now have a lot of nerve damage and a scar from my throat to my shoulder - taking out the 2nd "failed" metal plating. But hey ..... nobody died. Tis just a flesh wound - had worse!  Have a great time together. Catch you all another time.  BTW - had enormous fun with the tam carcasses - when the butcher asked how I wanted them butchered I was pretty vague and approximate.  Well - amazing how soon you find your way around a dead pig - or at least muckle lumps of it.  LOVED it - great weekend.  AND we got us our own bacon and hams and bits of cured meat hanging from butchers hooks in the cellar - just above where the Christmas beer barrel will go.  Happy days.  Had the best piece of roast shoulder of pork I have ever eaten - thanks to those very chubby girls.  Be safe - be happy. N x
