Title: CSSA meeting, 16th Sept 2009
Post by: cmorrell on September 11, 2009, 01:00:25 pm
I'm sure this isn't the best place to ask, but I'm not actually sure where is! My calendar tells me there's a general meeting next Wednesday, but the CSSA website isn't telling me where or when yet. I'm trying very hard to keep Wednesday clear, apart from one business lunch, so I can actually come up and meet more of you finally! (That wasn't meant as a threat....)

Our original venue for next weeks meeting is no longer available, so we are in the process of getting an alternative venue. When organised we will let everybody know

Opposite the stone of mannan and the mercant cross and tolbooth you mean!!!! The stone was there long before the co-op, hang on, maybe the co-op is more important, you can at least get wine and milk until 10.00pm!

Yes, the top bit is the actual stone and it was used in the dark ages for all sorts of rituals and celebrations,  it was nearer the Forth but moved to the Center of Clackmannan (forgot when) now it  is just outside our house and it casts a wounderful shadow through the bedroom windows ;)Also supposed to have Robert The Bruce's Glove under it!!!!

Clackmannanshire's motto is "Look aboot ye" which is what Bruce allegedly told his men when he lost his glove in Clackmannan. Clackmannan Tower belonged to the Bruce family. Robert Burns visited there and was "knighted" by the lady of the house (I think). The hill down from Clackmannan to the carse is called the "Look about ye" Brae.

No ancient rituals on Wednesday, though.

The stone has strong powers, I believe it to be a fertility thingy!!!! Last year I looked at to see a crowd singing around it, they probably all have babies now ;) I made a model of it and was thinking about making them as souvineers but had second thoughts!!!! This house would have been here when Robbie Burns visited as it dates back to 1730(http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Fantasy/ghost-17.gif)

I remember playing round about the toolboth as a kid Sandy. I slipped on pigeon s**t, ripped my first day on trousers and ended up with 4 stitches in my knee and I still have the scar on my knee all these many years later.

See, I told you it had strong powers, my Ex came up here and fell off his bike ;) http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/812/ (http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/812/) Found that Clackmannan was once an Island, the strange thing is a lot of Scotland history is based around this area, you have only to watch Braveheart to find the battle took place very close by, I also found Black Adders Castle and the family Morsolium near too!!!! An Historical place that is indeed strange..suits me and my partner!!

Thanks for a great venue last night. Good productive meeting, lovely cakes and a good laugh - brilliant. Sorry Steve wasn't allowed to join us - you're a hard woman!  ;D

And thanks to Andrew for a really interesting and useful input on what to ask the butcher for when pigs and lambs go for slaughter. I for one feel much more confident now.

Steve was in our lounge and caommented you would not have known there were so many people in the other room, we are often full and it's still quiet!!!!!! I learnt a lot too, I remember how I used to just buy the cuts of meats I knew the name for but some butchers had window displays with the name so that was OK.....I am the same with weights, that can be a problem for online shopping as in a shop you can see the size of a joint but online I just take a guess and sometimes get too small amounts, such as 2 carrots.  Steve was also looking at the economic side of smallholding and I added that not many hobbies do you get so much  in return + a reward at the end by way of the produce, getting pursusaded to get some meat birds!!!!! ummmmmmm Loved having you all here, you are all welcome whenever you need somewhere.

We had meat birds here once, great taste - but you have to have a man to do the
plucking and cleaning - I cannot do that myself - although if I had to, I would -

But why not let the men do the nasty bit, we do all the rearing and cooing and feeding and
getting toys, and activities, and bedding and water and such for the animals every day.
 ;D ;D ;D ;D  ( I know some men do that too)

The best way to get me to talk is just to come up to me and start talking.. don't let me edge away! Otherwise I just sit in a corner listening to other people talk :)

And on the note of photos, I'd left earlier than I needed to so I could have a wander around Culross on the way up. Just quick grabs so nothing special, but here are a couple of the photos I grabbed while there:
