Title: fencing for pigs

Post by: sausagesandcash on September 01, 2009, 12:58:22 am: I use horse tape (it's easier for the pigs to see, i'm told), and a good mains electric fence. WHen they are weaners I show them the tape and give them two or three touches off it. That does the trick, and they know to avoid it thereafter.

Post by: BadgerFace on September 01, 2009, 08:59:40 am: We have stock fencing, with one strand of electric about 8- 10 inches from the ground, just to stop them lifting the netting. Once they have had a few shocks, I rarely have the electric turned on. :pig:

Post by: Hilarysmum on September 02, 2009, 09:43:43 am: Dear Hilary has calmed down a lot lately, now she doesnt have the boar as a fence tester. Bless her. He is actually the boar who was in with Hilary. Obviously being used as a fence tester has changed his perspective on fences.

We were thinking about putting barbed wire along the bottom on the stock wire to try and stop them digging under, but the tape sounds good.

Even more aware of this after one of my GOS young boars dug under the stock wire yesterday and had a lovely time in my garden :)

Post by: daviddb on September 04, 2009, 08:31:36 am: Even six months in ours are still 'testing' the electric fence from time to time. Pig One got a real fourpenny one yesterday from sticking his nose under the electrified trip wire that runs in front of the gate.

It was quite a squeal!
