Title: Getting some pygmy goats!!
Post by: Roxy on August 31, 2009, 05:38:07 pm
Yes, more additons to my menagerie.  Two nannies, and an entire billy will be joining us.  Got a long journey there and back, but never mind.  Not seen them in the flesh.  Usual story, novice goat people, cannot cope, nannies now in kid, owner panics and wants rid.  Like I said to them, why get an entire billy if you do not know what you are doing.  Whats more they are in a normal sized garden :o

Got plenty of land here, just short of housing, so having to sort a temporary shelter for them.

Also just bought a British Alpine billy and a white nanny to start my goat breeding off again.  Obviously will be kept separate from pygmy billy ......although I can imagine some people would not think of the consequences of doing just that.

So menagerie has expanded even further!!

But it has amazed me that upon enquiring, none of the goats have ear tags, one does not even have a CPC number.  I have told them all that I am not collecting the goats until they are registered with DEFRA and ear tagged.  They all said they thought it ok to keep goats without tags.  One of the people has only had his goats a couple of weeks, so someone has sold them to HIM and not bothered about rules.  I can imagine they are not the only ones though.

You will rue the day you put tags in the Pygmy's ears.

Nice one Roxy! Good luck with them.
Will they be sharing field space with any of the other animals?
Is your milking nanny an Alpine too?  Pictures when they come please!

Isnt it maddening when people dont bother to even learn the rules, let alone follow them. Bad for the animals, and bad publicity for us smallholders (especially suburban ones)

I sometimes wish the rules were a bit easier to find, though.

Blimey, YES!! And not as sweeping, ie taking very small-holdings into consideration, as well as huge commercial places.
Sorry, I'll stop there, focus back on Roxy's tiny goaty pygmy thingies!

Little Blue, the llama does not like newcomers, so the pygmy goats will be having their own paddock and shelter.  It would be like a giant bearing down on them if the llama came charging towards them.  With the B Alpine being entire, he will not be going in the field with the llama either, or they may come to blows.  Nanny is not a B Alpine - she is white.  Owner said she was a white toggenburg, but I suggested sannan is more likely.
I have always liked the British Alpine and sannan, and had both breeds in the past.

Lovely!! As you know,we have one of each... I'm inclined to agree with her being a Sanaan.  Is she maiden or will you be able to have milk in your tea?!  Post pics when they come!
Was dreaming about llamas  - its your fault - and it was a giant one!

ooh what was the giant llama doing in your dream.  Hope it was not what my llama keeps trying to do with anything that moves!!!

Nanny is only two, so she has not kidded before.  Well, does not have an udder.  A bit unfortunate having to move her, as she has only been in her home, and so has the male, for two weeks.  Man who bought her has decided they are too big for his children (got them as pets!))  He now realises they are not suitable.

No. thank goodness!! Wouldn't have admitted it, if it was!!
It was in a lovely green paddock, I think we were helping renovate the farmhouse, but I'm not sure who it belonged to.................

Anyway. enough of that!
Why did the bloke not buy his kids goldfish, or hamsters or even a dog rather than blooming goats?! Nowt so strange as folk!
How long til you get them, are you very excited?
Margo is very unhappy with all this rain and sulks at milking time... at least yours will have some time to settle before you mate in the autumn then.  Mate her with the billy I mean!

Having a giggle at your post ....thanks for clarifying who was mating!!!  Its possible she is in kid, as they have been together in the field.  We will soon know if we hear that loud bleating shortly.

Should be collecting them on Saturday. But we are at a show first, helping a friend with her lively pony!!  Not far from you - Turnditch and Windley.

Thats very kind of you ....my friend is not feeling too well, and has decided not to go to the show tomorrow, now ....so we will not be going after all..With all the high winds and rain, I am surprised the show is going ahead, although from what she said, its not been as wet and windy over there as we have had the last few days.
