Title: Hi from a wannabe smallholder!
Post by: mattltm on December 26, 2013, 07:56:24 am
Hi all,

I'm Matt from Kent and one day I would love to own a smallholding in Wales.

I currently run a small B&B here on the South coast with my wife and baby daughter.

I hope to learn a lot about owning a smallholding from other members here and maybe I will be able to pass some of my own experience of other things on.

Matt

Thanks both.

I do like it here on the cliff top but I long for more land and a wood burning stove!

I used to keep chickens at my old place (before we took over the family business) and miss just sitting with them listening to them coo!

It will probably be a good 10 years before we look at moving and getting started but I want to learn as much as I can so we are well prepared.

Hi! I'm guessing you're not so far from me - whereabouts are you? I'm at the foot of the North downs between Ashford, Canterbury and Folkestone. The wood burning stove has proved it's worth this Christmas - if only to provide my parents with a warm room to snooze away from the storms!

Hi Matt,

I spent some time in my teens on Seasalter Beach near Whitstable. Later on in Maidstone and East Peckham. Which part of Kent are you in?

I'm in Broadstairs. I have a great sea view over the English Channel but it's got a very small garden. I've been looking for a bit of land locally where I can get my hands dirty but have had no luck  :(

Hi there welcome    and good luck.. You will learn loads here..  You could maybe try a few chickens..... they dont take up much space and if you get commercial hybrids at point of lay should give you  loads of eggs.

I too have some very happy memories of times with my wife and our kids when they were young on seasalter beach, it's a magical place. We lived nearby in Faversham before heading north.

You could maybe try a few chickens.....

I had chickens at my previous house. we had a good sized back garden. I had 7 in total (2 Fenning Black, 2 Mendlesham Blue and 3 ex battery hens)  and they were just free to roam around the garden. I made a run from 8 pieces of Heras fencing (two sheets on the bottom, two sheet on the top and one on each side that we put them in if we went out for more that a few hours and at night.

Loved having the fresh eggs and just sitting in the garden watching them get up to their antics!

Have you thought about an allotment? It's a great way to get started.
