Title: 4x4 Farm Quad
Post by: littlelugs on November 29, 2013, 07:11:55 pm
So I'm after some advice, we have decided to take the plunge and get a quad bike for our place... can anyone recommend somewhere in the south wales area. we haven't got a massive budget so are looking for second hand around the £1k/£1500 mark. I have been looking on eBay but to be honest I'm scared of being ripped off. The local quad bike dealers around just want to sell top of the range brand new bikes but we just need something reliable that will do the job.
Any recommendations greatly received.

I'm in the same boat (and looking at the same price bracket), though I think I will end up buying privately (going to look at one tomorrow in fact - off ebay  ::) ).

The fencing bloke who was doing my boundary with the forestry land recommended DaltonsATVs Lampeter, but it's only a 2nd hand recommendation and I've no idea what their prices are like (i suspect they won't have much in that price bracket).

Trouble is the main dealers do tend to be a bit limited in that price range from what I've seen.

Daltons Atv usually have a large number of second hand quads and they also sell new being a Honda dealer. They are very helpful.
We get all our spares there, and I know someone who has her quad serviced there. They collect and return the quad for her.

Mmm I have just been through this. I went to see quite a few on ebay in that price bracket. I got fed up with driving round the countryside and looking a junk. I ended up buying a 2 year old one ! I wanted a road legal one as I mainly wanted it for off road trips. Now I have one I think I will be using it lots round the small holding for logs and feeding etc. I got a Yamaha Grizzly 550... it is fantastic . For pottering around and towing small trailers you would manage with a 300cc. Wales seems to be exactly the right place to find a used one ! Down here in the SE they where hard to find. Good luck

Hmm...  yes, but they're a bit too well used and command high prices for a rusty bag of bolts - all the ones that seem to sell for reasonable money on ebay seem to be Yorkshire or cornwall when I look.

The 'good runner' I went to see wouldn't start when I was there - I didn't buy it.

Thanks for all the replies, we took the plunge and bought one locally on ebay.. it was stated as the reverse not working and after enquiries the seller thought it may be the reverse switch so we had a look at it and all other gears were fine and it runs smoothly.
So £1100 later and we picked it up very pleased with the bike, had a look at the reverse cable and it was loose, tightened it up and bingo! we have a fully functioning quad!
I am sure if it had been advertised as full working order it would have gone out of our price range so on this occasion we were very very lucky  :excited: off to play on it now!

If we want anything like that we tend to look on eBay.

OH is a bit of an eBay ninja and will research stuff for months until he is really familiar with the market and the right thing comes along.

Drives me mad at times but we have always got a good deal - especially bidding on things that are badly listed and therefore aren't found by the mainstream buyers.
