Title: Loss of today's posts and PMs
Post by: Dan on November 24, 2013, 09:36:23 pm
Hello all

I've made a very big mistake this evening that has resulted in all of today's posts and PMs being deleted, without hope of recovery.  :-[

Earlier today a new member's account was accidentally deleted while spam was being cleaned up. This evening I was made aware of it and restored a backup of the forum from around midnight last night, so I could recreate the account and its posts.

Unfortunately I made a stupid typo and restored the backup over the live forum instead of over the staging server copy.

I'm really, really sorry about this. It's a nightmare come true, since there's nothing I can do to retrieve the information from today. It's never happened before, and I'm so horrified I'm fairly sure I'll never make the same mistake again.

As ever thank you all for being here, and I hope you can forgive me.  :raining:

Thanks,

Dan  :-[ :(

We all cock it up from time to time Dan. Don't lose too much sleep over it.

Just proves your as human as the rest if us! Don't dwell on it, in the words of Scarlett O'Hara, " tomorrow is another day"

We do all do things like this at times. Don't worry about it.

I think this forum is amazing Dan, I'm sure we can all survive the odd glitch, so I'm sure you will be forgiven, (eventually ;) )

That's a big relief Dan. I thought I was going mad and imagining posting replies that now weren't there.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all you do behind the scenes to make this site what it is .

You were still working away after midnight,  did you ever imagine when you started , that it would be as big as what it is ....., and the grief  that would be caused by spam.

Keep up the great work,  mojo

We're very grateful for all the work you do keeping the forum going. That the odd glitch happens just proves you're a person and not a computer  ;)

I can imagine how you feel, but its just one little slip in many years of wonderful work.  Dont beat yourself up about it.  We all appreciate what we do get from all your efforts and these things are bound to happen sometimes

Please add my heartfelt thanks for giving us the forum and running it so well for us xxxxxxx  :bouquet: :bouquet: :trophy: :trophy:

Thanks all, much appreciated (but I still feel like an eejit  :D ).

Please don't - someone I used to be an 'admin' with on a support forum wiped the entire lot once. Literally a blank forum with about 6 years worth of emotional support messages and information gone!   I think she went on to moderate netmums after that  ;)

Not an idiot but human    I remember finishing off a long report for a child in care that was due to be handed out at a core group meeting the next day, as all the rest of the team were on strike (I was working for an agency) I enjoyed the time getting stuck in...then, my boss brought me a coffee and cake and I accidently pressed delete instead of save so deleted the lot...no back up and I had not saved any of it!!! Thankfully I did remember most stuff so started again...lesson learned for me!

Could have happened to me... I remember that night (5 to 12, of course!) when I wiped my entire hard disc. Argh!
Not to worry - we'll all survive!  ;)

I accidently pressed delete instead of save so deleted the lot...

Deleting a file does not delete it - merely changes the file information to tell the computer it can be overwritten. Thus it would have been easily recoverable.

Been there, done that ;).  (then put in place some hourly incrementals to save my ass for the next time I do it!)

Just out of interest how would you go about finding it when something like that has happened?

I thought I was going mad or even madder than I already am  ::) when I couldn't find my posts and then my PMs had vanished  ::)
