Title: Spinning help/classes in Carmarthen area?
Post by: Mrs Pea on October 14, 2013, 04:09:29 pm
I was wondering if anyone knows of or could point me in the right direction of any spinning classes in my area, with a wheel and fleece of course (not an exercise class, which is all google seems to come up with and definitely not what I am looking for :roflanim: )

We had our first two sheep and 3 alpacas sheared in June, so I have bags of fleece sitting here waiting to be dealt with.  During the holidays my daughter and I did get a small amount washed and had a go with a drop spindle but then my husbands aunt came to stay and gave me (on permanent loan ;) ) her Ashford
Traditional  :spin:

Well it turns out that my daughter is a natural wiz with the wheel but apparently I am not - daughter has returned to Uni and I am completely useless. :-[ :-\ I was truly stunned at being given the wheel but now am so frustrated at not being able to 'do it'.

I do know that there is group of spinners who meet once a month in town but have been a little hesitant in contacting them because I don't know if they are more aimed at people who know what they're doing and I am a completely incompetent novice at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa

Have you tried finding a spinning group? I know Bionic goes to one and she's in your area. Might be worth asking her.

Lisa, there is a Carmarthen guild of spinners weavers and dyers. I don't go to that group myself but know a few people who do. They meet once a month and are probably the group you are referring to. As far as I am aware all groups would welcome a novice.

The group I belong to meets every week on a Tuesday afternoon at the reading room in Llansadwrn. If you are out that way feel free to pop in on Tue.

Lisa,
I spoke to one of the members from the Carmarthen guild today and she said they would be very happy for novices to join them. So you don't have an excuse now  ;D :spin:

Thank you for your replies, just to let you know I did contact the Carmarthen Spinners group and will be going along to their next session on 2 November.

Bionic, I may also take up your kind invite to join you at your group, just need to work out how far from Llansadwrn I am  ;)

Lisa, whereabouts are you? You don't need to give your exact address just a rough idea

Just seen your location on the knitting thread. Llansadwrn will probably take you about 30-35 mins from the roundabout that joins the A40

Takes about 15/20 mins to get down to Carmarthen from here, so added on maybe about 40/45 mins in total - that's not too bad ;)

I'll need to get my OH to look it up on the sat nav because I am terribly "geographically challenged"  ::) but I'm fine once I know where I'm going.
