If you missed this - just finished - go and watch it on I-player. Fantastic programme - absolutely LOVED the new veg Andrew the farmer has developed. And that ginormous greenhouse stacked full of beautiful lush tomatoes was unbelievable!

I have done Sky+ so my boys can watch it tomorrow.
-
Don't want to spoil teh surprise but I really fancy trying orange and purple Broccoli! :excited:
-
That's on the list to watch tomorrow.

I had hoped that the programme would have made mention of the fact that our food doesn't have to be grown on a vast scale, but can be home grown too. There was a lot of talk of chemicals, without being specific.

Brilliant programme - loved the mobile broccoli pick and pack machine! Something actually worth watching on the telly for a change
-
What's really nice is that they appear to have managed to make a programme both interesting and informative to the public but also giving a realistic reflection of farming, feedback from farmers seems to be good too.
Thumbs up

I thought it was really interesting too, Also amazed by the broccoli warehouse on wheels!!!
As for the tomato Poly tunnel made mine look tiny and insignificant ! lol!!
Looking forward to tonights episode
Cara

Didn't see it, not going to see it on I player ( not with less than 1/2 meg broad band speed >:( )
So are any of these new varieties available for us to grow and if so can any of you remember any of there names. Especially tomatoes, peppers sweet & chilli. Thanks
Will try to watch tonight's program now I know about it 8)

I love seeing the scale and inginuity of some of the equipment! And hearing about the profit margins. But found some of the presenters lines were cringe worthy... "guess the Roman's liked their chips?" :-J
Seeing footage of 2012 made me want to cry, just remembering all the poor floodede fields. The fields look better this year :)

The new vegetables were experiments by Andrew the farmer. What he did was travel abroad in search of new varieties, plant a test batch, and oif that was successful go on to plant a workable number, and it it proved popular would get into full scale production. So I guess it may be a while before we see purple or orange broccoli, and Kohl Rabi that tasted of melon. :excited: Must remember to watch tonight too.

Didn't they say the tomato greenhouse was 27 acres big??? With its own gas fired power plant. Amazing!

We did in this bit of Scotland

Got it in Angus too - last nights was really good ~cereals. The farmer was a great presenter I thought.

Did I get the time wrong then - was it 8 or 9?
Stupid me - thought it was 9 - even had alarm on. Watching now.
Edited again! Not so stupid me after all!
Not entirely my fault - just looked at the programme schedule and they have been changing the times - it's 9 pm tonight!
Stupid BBC!

So tonight it was fruit. I was very interested in the trial of mason bees. For some reason I didn't like the look of them, but they seem highly appropriate for use in orchards. We have a big problem with pollination of our fruit trees here because 4 years out of 5 the bees aren't out and about when the trees are in blossom as it's too cold and wet.
You could see too why you need planning permission for polytunnels - acres of the things :o

why 9pm though my kids love these programmes but thats a wee bit late! My friend works for Castleton fruit farm and Greg had stovies for his lunch in the farm shop while he was there, loved them so much he went back the next day for more!
