Title: Vicon CM 168 Drum Mower
Post by: smudger on August 25, 2013, 05:59:56 pm
Anyone used or know of their reputation.

How old is the engineering, reliabilty, ease of maintenance etc.

We have a 30hp mitsy tractor - will it cope (d/w about a ton and we have some front weights on it).

Thx in advance.

No knowledge of this mower but 30hp sounds on the low side to me for a drum mower.

Ths Henchard

Even a 5'6" one?

What ca a 30hp cope with. I was looking at a finger bar mower - bit of topping plus 5 acres of hay field a year but the inability to cut blown over grass put me off.  Disc mowers don't seem to come up / exist for smaller tractors?

I just found this pdf

http://www.acidist.com/vicon/Specs/2005_drum%20mowers.pdf (http://www.acidist.com/vicon/Specs/2005_drum%20mowers.pdf)

the specs say 'required PTP 27 HP' (I'm presuming that 'required PTP'  is the minimum power required at the PTO) thus a 30 hp tractor is probably underpowered (or very borderline) as I suspected. I think it really needs more like 45/50 hp.

That's not to say it wouldn't work on 5 acres if you cut in a very low gear to keep the revs up.
There's a used Vicon on Ebay at present

Seems I have 26hp so just might swing it. I've got used to 'working' for less than minimum wage, so speed is not of the essence.  ;D
