Title: Any ideas for a man's anniversary gift
Post by: colliewobbles on July 31, 2013, 11:53:38 am
Hi all - it's our 10th wedding anniversary on Friday and as usual I am really struggling to find a gift that will be appreciated by hubby.  10th wedding anniversary is either tin/pewter or diamond - so his gift for me should be easy given the second option  :innocent:

Anyway - the usual suggestions include all things like cuff-links, wines, money clips etc - all of which would have no interest to hubby whatsoever.

I thought as there are lots of gentlemen on here with similar interest in livestock and the environment you might be able to come up with some suggestions of something you would appreciate receiving.  Up to and around £50?

Ta - Donna

My husband is no small holder but he too love plants as gifts, an unusual tree even? I had a Hazel Nut tree as a present and love it, suppose to ward off evil spirits as well :innocent:

I love the plant/tree idea but we might be moving soon - just waiting to hear back from the council on a tenanted farm we have applied for you see.

Maybe I could get him a voucher from a good nursery to buy a good specimen when we know if we are moving or not.

What about a nice extra special tool  :innocent: ....we love vouchers for garden centres, they are always handy and always needed..in fact our last voucher went on a posh spade but my husband broke it digging a hole for a pond that's now filled in

That's possible - but he is a gardener by trade so wouldn't seem much of a gift!!

I suppose not.......mind you, I love a good special pen knife....one with loads of special bits for cleaning  your nails and getting splinters out...........I did  have a Swiss army knife once but lost it!! loved it, you  could even get it engraved......although vouchers are more sensible as then he can get what he wants as a treat........we bought some roses as well once......then of course there is always other garden stuff like chairs, hammocks, lighting, burners, depends on how much you want to spend and what he likes, even a nice hip flask or good thermos....men can be much more difficult!!!

Swiss army knife is a good idea which I'm sure he could get lots of use from - will have a look online and see what I can find.

Have also found a couple of good nurseries nearby that do vouchers - any suggestions on a good, native tree that would look good as a specimen tree but not too big?  If it is also good for wildlife then even better!

special Swiss Army knife (http://www.swissarmy365.co.uk/swiss-army-knives-c44/wenger-ranger-hardwoods-57-swiss-army-knife-p302)

You can have it engraved for not too much more, and I have to say that the saw is excellent - will easily cut through branches 1" thick.

There is a range, not as expensive as the one above - type in 'Wenger hardwoods' into the search box at the top.

I know it's not 'tin' but it's metal so near as damn it!!

I was stuck on this a couple of years back! in the end I bought a Cornish Tin VW camper van that holds 2 bottles of wine - all my hubbies interests (bar guitars) rolled into one. Men are so hard to buy for!!

That sounds lovely too - my hubby is not a great wine drinker either though - these men are impossible aren't they?  Have seen loads of stuff I'd like whilst searching!!

How about a weather station - one of those that has an outside sensor and then the signal is either picked up by your computer or a readout screen in the house.  He can then bore everyone rigid for months telling them how fast the wind's blowing, what the temperature dropped to overnight, that pressure's dropping so it may rain soon, etc......

That's a great present - but for me!!!!  I have a Env. Science degree and nothing would please me more than a gift like that.  I can also be a first class bore about rock formations and types.   :eyelashes:

Donna I'm a gardener and the tool your hubby wants is one of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Jakoti-Hand-Shears-/251240333952 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Jakoti-Hand-Shears-/251240333952)
You can get them a bit cheaper and if you buy one ask for xtra springs (usually free)

Other than a 4 inch quality paint scraper the only other tool he needs is a decent Felco secatears

Ooooh - they look nice. What do you use them for CF?

They are for hand trimming sheep, but are used for cutting back plants and shrubs in the garden.
I use them for topary and general clipping. Very sharp and very strong. Brillant bit of kit.

My OH will be 60 in October and I'm facing the 'what can I get him?' problem. He isn't interested in anything much other than listening to music but he has just replaced all his hi-fi equipment. He does love Shire horses but we'd never fit one in the garden.  :roflanim: He also loves trains, particularly steam trains. He is also blind so no books. Help!

Thanks, CF but he already has a couple and listens quite often. They are the sort of things that the kids can get him though. Our daughter usually does give him CDs. I want to give him something special this year as it's a big birthday.

What about either a day out or a special trip out on a steam train, some have meals included, it would be even better if doubled up with a shire horse centre.   I grew up with my dad working on trains and the smell and feel of a steam train is something very special, you can feel the power all through your body.http://www.steam-train.co.uk/

I know you've got your gift sorted now, but this might be helpful to others - I bought my husband holsters (not sure if that is the right word or not) from Journeyman Leather for his sheep foot shears and dosing gun.  They slot onto his belt, and he has two dosing gun ones, so if he is say mineral drenching and worming at the same time, then stopping to do something else, everything is safe.  It is the only present I have ever seen him look genuinely pleased with.

I bought him a Daisy reader which reads audio tapes, bookmarks them and everything about three years ago. He's not used it yet.  Says he has to 'be inthe mood for reading'.

I did think of this type of thing as a possible, Sandy. Checked this site but none of the links are working. We do have the Severn Valley Steam train near us so I might see what they do. There are also steam train holidays.

Bottle of nice malt?

He's teetotal. I'd have to drink it for him.   Bottle of malt it is then.  :roflanim:

Carry on with the suggestions, folks.

Do you mean the wire free ones ?
I got some (only cheapies from Aldi) but they are great, I can listen to radio or television while outside, esp if I'm wanting to watch a programme, when I hear it being announced I then go in to watch it, no outside time wasted. I could record them but the video hard drive is full  ::)

Love that idea as well, depending on how much you have in the tin under the floor  :-J , it will be the most wonderful experience and you can both enjoy each others company and feel the experience, I would love to go on a nice long train ride, hope to go to Oban but with a packed lunch and flasks!

He already has wireless headphones, I have his last pair and there are about three more pairs (wired and unwired) under the bed. One of those pairs has never been used.

I think I will have to look at the holiday idea. At least I get as treat as well then. Don't know how much money I will have by then as our daughters have decided that he is having a party. The only thing is - guess who is footing the bill for that?

Thanks everyone, and especially this suggestion.  I ordered Wednesday afternoon and with special delivery it came Thursday morning, even with engraving.  Gave it to him yesterday and he is very pleased with his new toy.  We had a lovely meal out last night at a gorgeous country restaurant and am off to a household auction this morning with my daughter to bid on a couple of things taking my fancy.

That's very impressive, CW. Glad he likes it. My OH has a penknife that I gave him that he takes everywhere with him. Not a Swiss army one as it would be too complicated for him but a blade and a bottle opener/screwdriver.

Thanks for putting this post on. I now have some good ideas for my OH.

Giving special anniversary gifts ideas for man is not so difficult to get. There are many anniversary gifts ideas and one you can buy to present your loved husband. I recently had my anniversary on 12 aug and I gifted him our first met photo frame , he was so happy to have this precious old .

We have a holiday cottage we let out in Ffestiniog ( good small holder's rates I am sure!!! )  if he would like a weekend of little steam trains??

As for my ideal husband present, my wife and I have decided to just ask the other for a suggestion- and invariably include some 'incredible edible' we can enjoy together. Is that really cheating?

I have dyslexic fingers as well.

His 60th was last year and I've forgotten what I did get in the end, but I'm starting to think about this year now. A weekend away near steam trains sounds ideal. He did say it would be nice to get away for his birthday but I have a commitment on the following day. Could maybe do it another weekend though. Is your cottage disabled friendly as, not only is he blind, but I am physically disabled. I don't use a wheelchair (although I have a scooter for when I go out) but need somewhere relatively level and all on one floor.

Not anniversary time yet for us but for my birthday treat a fortnight ago we had a night in a hotel with an en suite bath so OH could have his first bath since October last year when we moved to our croft !
I am away, where I have access to a bath, for a fortnight in every six weeks, but I don't know how he has lasted so long! Hopefully we will have a bath installed in the house by this Christmas.
It was also the first night he hadn't slept on the croft since moving. We were only away for less than 20 hours but it was lovely and money very well spent.
So I would think along the lines of a similar treat again.

whoops that's a nice  a timely reminder that we have our 26th anniversary on the 15 Sept .

Here is my suggestion .

Have a look into the index of  Blackwell Scientific books

Their  Farm building construction was much appreciated by me for our 10th anniversary as I was about to embark on setting up six insulated stock breeding sheds with air con, water & electrics ..
It also covered things like floor drainage gradients and numerous other good sound ideas to consider .
I was also given a couple of in-depth books about the stock we were hoping to raise rather than rely on hearsay , witchcraft or uneducated practices that would have ruined us from day one .
