Title: Pig feed
Post by: Greenerlife on July 29, 2009, 04:15:53 pm
I can't find any threads on this but am curious to know from all you people out there...how much are you paying for pig feed?  It seems extortionately expensive where I am, and I'd like to know if I am being ripped off!  I only have two weaners (my first - I've named them, I know you are not supposed to, but I've named them after people I don't particularly like, so I won't have any qualms when they go! LOL) so I am not buying in any great bulk.  I would appreciate an idea of what is a good price.

Our local (Devon) merchants charge £7.50 (inc vat) for a 25kg bag.

How much are you paying?

£7.50 is quite cheap Julie as the Smallholder Pig Starter/Grower Pellets is £9.70 / 20kg + £6.00 delivery on 1 bag going up to 11.99 for 2 from animal feed store.com...... bet they sell a lot online   :o

We pay 9 euros per bag for 25 kilos - that's about 8 quid but if you can buy in bulk you can get it for 7 euros-ish per 25kilos. This is in France by the way!

Bloody hell BillyBerridge, I think you just blew us all out the water!  :)

£7.20 per 25kg in Northamptonshire

Very surprised at some of these prices. It's £7 for a 25kilo bag in Orkney, although we have to pay an extra 45p-per-bag to get it transported on the ferry to our island.  We can make a £70-per-tonne saving if we buy it by the tonne. Can't help but feel some English suppliers are taking the mickey.

Here where the pig is probably the most common farmed animal, prices vary from 10.20 euros per sack to 5.06 euros (bulk).  If you know of any other pig keepers locally perhaps form a co-operative and buy by the tonne.

Or invest in a silo, buy in bulk loads and bag it your self making a healthy profit from other local pig keepers!

I was paying 14 euros for 50kg of growers pellets. Got it from a friend who buys bulk and supplies quite a few other people too, comes in one tonne disposable sacks and I take 50kg sacks to be refilled when necessary. Last year I fed farine d'orge and the weaners turned out so fatty, almost 50/50 meat to fat. This year with pellets they're a lot meatier and leaner, and 30kg heavier at the same age!......Ree

I have been feeding Dobson & Horrell pig grower at £9. 10p a bag but ended up buying in bulk from my local feed store down the road and she knocked 30p off per bag. Next year i will buy the lot from her in bulk. I am feeding two pigs.  :pig:

Have pm'd you HM with details. Unfortunately you're too far away, the drive with em in the back of the landy would kill off what remaining sense of smell I have. Won't be getting another two til March next year, two weaners last me a year and this year I have my first lamb as well......Ree

Ree could not recommend my escape artist pigs to anyone at present.  I have been considering some lambs from a friend who has too many, then someone mentioned "blue tongue; ear tags and the new micro chip ear tags " and suddenly lamb seemed very expensive.

Lambs are great, get them!!!!  They'll come with tags (get some) and should have had their injections for BT et al by the time they rock up to your gate. You have a cheptel number I assume,(get some) so will get any notification from the vet of what injections are needed and when. I'm so glad I got a ewe with two lambs at foot (get some) .Unfortunately one was a ram and is destined for colder climes in two weeks time.......Ree

PS. Do subliminal messages really work?

Mmmm the jury is still out on this one, am worried about the cost of these new tags.  Do you know anything about them?
Title: Re: Pig feed
Post by: shetlandpaul on August 01, 2009, 08:52:52 am
they are under two quid but the sites i have been on sell them in 50s. there is bound to be a supplyer who will do smaller amounts. it seems you only now need the tag and not the reader. which shows for stock care they are a waste of time.

So which brainy brussels magnate thought up this one then?  Perhaps he has shares in a certain tag company.

Hi
I go to the mill that supplies my local store.I pay £5.64 for a 25kg bag, my local store was selling the same bag for £8.68.  Well worth looking into cutting out the middle man, it's the only way to make any real profits.  Good luck.

If you can get together with other pig keepers and buy by the tonne it should be even cheaper.

I feed my pigs organic pig pellets which are €15.50 for a 25kg bag!  A friend of mine who also has weaners is feeding his the same organic pig pellets as I do but he has started adding rolled barley and some maize - one third of each.  One of the fellas in the agri shop told me that maize gives the fat a yellow colour so I don't think Ill give mine any.  Anyone know about the rolled barley?  Is that okay to give to them?  I also get fruit & veg from our local shop a few times a week but as the pigs are getting older they are getting more expensive to feed!!

Are the rest of ye not feeding organic feed to your pigs?  Would love to know this as I think I might not go with the organic feed next year.  I am also getting turkeys in a few days (like the pigs, for our own use only) and again not sure whether to go down the organic route or not.   :pig:  :turkey:

why if your feeding organic feed at twice the cost why are you then feeding non organic veg.

Thats why I need help from you guys!!  ;) Friends of ours reared 2 weaners last year and again this year on organic pig feed and fed them fruit and veg so I thought seeing as the meat turned out so nice last year I'd do the same, but I'm really learning as I go along!!  Would you advise to just get the ordinary pig feed and go from there?

Unless everything you feed is organic there is no point in feeding organic pig food.  Its horrendously expensive.

get a better make thats not full of junk and you still will save a fortune. it will be the fruit and veg thats would have made good pork. unless your planning to go the whole hog as getting your land certified and then sourcing your piglets from an organic source. then theres the vets and the rest. don't bother give them as much freedom as possible and a rich food source lots of diffrent foods and you will get great meat and happy pigs.

Thanks again guys!  I was relying on the friend who has already done this. Now that they are getting bigger they are obviously eating more so therefore far more costly!  Will get the other stuff tomorrow and mix it in with the organic stuff until its all gone.  Ive my lambs going on their "holidays" on Saturday so Ill be able to let the pigs out into that area (about 3/4 of an acre) during the day so we really should have very happy pigs then!  Thanks again!  :)   :pig:

Try and avoid all the GM stuff (it's on the label). Unfortunately Irelands full of the stuff.

I've just read the ingredients on the non-organic nuts and it's scary :o
but as the current three ladies are off next week I'll stick with it. But next time will be different.
Can anyone offer a practical way to mix my own? I've read recipes in piggy books but you would need a big barn and lots of cash to get all the ingredients they recommend together at the one time. That's the problem with the nuts; they're so damned handy.
In addition to forage and veg, and the nuts, I had been feeding rolled barley. Would it be a problem with the rules and regulations if I cracked a few eggs - straight from the henhouse - into the barley? It would be a great way of using the kitchen scraps that can't be fed to the pigs - sort of recycling them through the hens.

we buy barley, wheat beans and pes in either tons or half tons from local farmers and mill them to a powder form ready to mix with water for a wet feed.
we have taken our feed quantities from old pig keeping books, our pigs do not only thrive on this mix but its far cheaper (less than one hundred pounds a ton) and the butcher always comments on the fantastic pork.
