Title: A heat wave round the corner
Post by: Victorian Farmer on June 29, 2013, 07:43:27 pm
I do think that we will have a heat wave for next friday im saying 30 c could be beat i havent seen this set up since 2009 i do hope things warm up for you folk ..................This was said this afternoon paid forcast farmers up date Just a very quick post today because the message is simple and over analysing the situation isn’t the best use of time on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The key message is the first half of next week looks iffy, especially in the north. During the second half and into the following week there are indications of high pressure building strongly and cutting off the westerly flow. This would give the potential for heatwave conditions to develop.

Forecasting 35 degrees here (in the shade) next week. So may need to damp down the chicken runs. Got thunderstorms and rain first though.

Well, everybody else seems to have had the heat wave - it's our turn now.

(Can't cope with heat - guess why I live in Scotland! It's too hot for me when it gets up to 20 degree - Celsius, that is, of course...)

I so remember the last summer we lived in England, I was so hot I had to visit a drug dealer and beg for a glass of water. (I was going to visit them as part of my job :innocent: )

Hehe - that reminds me of the last time I wore a bikini... '84, I think it was. An ancient bikini (50s style, jumble sale!), plus wellies, and me on the tractor in Australia. Oh dear...  ;D My colleague's eyes nearly popped out!

Hot days ! no fun really as the afternoons are usually spent indoors then its all go of an evening. I guess there is no pleasing me unless we have no wind, no rain and a nice 20-25.
i just can not imagine being in the west coast of the USA with such hgh temperatures. Not sure that there are any smallholders  there but imagine having to look after animals out there - as it is I have topped up water 3 times today.

Any ideas for the far South East on Weds pm? Got school sports day followed by fete. I've checked various on-line forecasts which vary from cold and rain, through overcast but warm to warm (not hot) but sunny with zero chance of rain. Bizarre to have such a mix and impossible to plan refreshment for.

Nor here on the Bristol/Gloucester borders.  It was blowing a gale most of the day and decidedly nippy!  It was dry with sunny periods though which was something!

i think its the only thing that i get  right .iv had a real bad season lost 60 ewes in march to the wether  only 2 weeks of the sale should of sold in November .Done more barley and rape only to be told that 20 percent is eney good .No grass 3 bee hives left out of 20 all lost .Bought in 4 cock birds all infertile no chicks .Di dent do turkeys or geese the price of electricity and crumbs to high so i don't see a way out of this. I'm thinking of having 2014 season  out from march contract tract er work etc if i had no skills i would of gone bust so not a good time i don't post much as my advise as got me into this mess still 12 months to sort there wont be meney rare breeds left feed costs to high etc .iv never seen farming so hard

So, so sorry to hear that VF  :(  I knew you'd had a hard March but didn't realise how hard. Just awful.   I really hope that things turn around for you very soon, you are always so supportive to everyone on here - about time you had some good come your way  :bouquet:

Yup, cost of feed etc has been making me think twice about keeping our livestock I must admit.  It's the ad-ons of injections, shearing, pony feet trimming - its all small amounts but adds up over the year and as we have had nothing but bad weather since we moved here nearly 4 years ago, so spent more on food than would have liked - it's financially hard to justify.  Do love having them though but there's only pennies to be made really if anything.

Not doing Muscovy ducks this year, couldn't make it work financially last year so took most of the eggs and left mums with 4 each - have let all the chicks out with their mums instead of cooping them for first month, lots are being taken of course by herons and crows  ::)   Mallards seems to be doing very well this year, too many eating the food though.
Hope your weather prediction bids well VF, at least  :sunshine: keeps our chins up  :D

The thing i don't get is i get vets food stuff every six weeks and in that time its still going up shopping hardware we don't stand a chance .The barley and rape cost me 20 thousand in fuel and grain and that return would broke even .So the lambs geese chickins would be a bonus but only a small bit is good .I could of borrowed and gone again but it was to late in the season .The rent is £500 a month with work on top .The live stock needs to pay and at the moment it do sent go nere .The wether never seen it like it is the jet stream is up and dawn but this high is massive the only problem is when it ends flash floods if the jet stream do sent sort the wether will be better in Scotland than in the UK .But if the jet stream is low dawn and blocks the cold air will freeze Scotland so if this happend in November it would be 2010 winter again and 4 months freeze .That is why i never replanted august and September could go dawn the pan at eney time IL do thainstone and carlile and keep a low profile ,have a  nice day

VF, so sorry to hear that you are having a terrible time, that's the big downside to farming in any form, you are too reliant on mother nature.
The bad weather conditions effect us all  directly or indirectly but you appear to have had the lot, heres wishing you a quick recovery!! :bouquet:

Thanks for that I'm thinking of tacking 2014 out and work contract tract er work etc if i PAC up in march after lambing i could come back October and re plant and go for it in the spring the only problem is this Autumn and winter i have no grass and little straw and still have the feed and diesel to pay .I'm upset that the rare breed poultry will disape re just as things looked better

I love the chicken pictures on Facebook, they really make me want some rare breeds but I just dare not get any more until we move, this house is fine but many others will not be and I would hate to get hens for them to become Fox play things!!I am surprised as there is a big market for chickens...maybe you are too far away for the people who want them!

http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/what-is-a-heat-wave/ (http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/what-is-a-heat-wave/)         7 days late             When was the last time we had a prolonged spell of hot weather in the UK?

The last time we saw a long spell of warm weather was in July 2006, where temperatures were above 28 °C in many areas for a fortnight. We have had shorter spells of warm weather since, however, such as the 23 – 26 July last year, when temperatures peaked at 30.7 °C.

I too am so sorry that you have been having such a tough time of it all VF. Its no wonder that food prices have soared in the shops if things are scarce and very expensive. I was out shopping with my friend yesterday, and I was telling her that a year or so ago, I used to do a fortnightly shop of Lidls, then one supermarket for my meat (it came from local farms) then a bigger supermarket for all the rest. I would spend around 150€ for the lot if I was careful. Nowadays, I can spend that in one shop alone. If I did the three, it would be around 250€ Im sure. Its quite worrying, especially as we are on a fixed income.
Anyway, its going to be lovely tomorrow, and we are having our first BBQ. We bought an electric rotisserie thingy to go on it, so Ill be doing a chicken. Hopefully it will be warm enough tomorrow morning for us to have our breakfast on the decking. We are then having a day in the garden. Loads to plant and loads of weeding to do after all that rain!!!!

It does usually get a bit hot down here but this year has been below the norm until now. At last the lawn is dead and I do not have to cut it !! it's a bit warm to work but but I'd rather lug water bottles around than cut the soddin lawn !! hate it. Pigs were in their mud bath at 09:30 but the stream is still flowing so no worries on keeping them cool.  Tops of my ears are burnt but he ho.

Don't want toworry you, MAK but a friend of ours has just had a melanoma removed from the top of his ear. I suspect it's a place people don't think to protect when using sun screen.

Don't want toworry you, MAK but a friend of ours has just had a melanoma removed from the top of his ear. I suspect it's a place people don't think to protect when using sun screen.

According to what I've read, most melanoma occur on parts of the body that never see the sun - so sunscreen would seem to be unlikely to protect against them.

That's about all of me then.  Even my eyes are having trouble with the brightness  :sunshine: wearing shades all the time just now  8)

It's BOILING here.  I can't stay out in the sun for long at all but not complaining, just wish we'd got all our veggie patches and polytunnel sorted out this year.
