What is the best vaccinations to get for a pet rabbit?
Currently in the house but hoping to move outside when the weather picks up, We live on a farm so Myxi is my biggest worry!
-
The two vaccines for rabbits are myxomatosis and VHD ( viral haemorrhagic disease ). There is now a combi vaccine for the two diseases.
Even an indoor rabbit is susceptible to myxo as it is carried by the rabbit flea that can hop on dogs and cats.
-
Those diseases are also carried by any biting insect that is likely to feast on a rabbit.
We used the Insectocutor electric fly killers in out rabbit sheds as well a vaccinations.
I had to empty the dead insect trays at least once a week in the 20 x 40 shed that was a sealed air conditioned environment .
Be aware that the site of the vaccination can become a subcutaneous lump so do try and recall where you had the injection placed , lest you think it has developed rabbit tumours
