On Tuesday morning in our hay barn we found a litter of 5 new born feral kittens next to the body of their mum. She was definitely dead, poor girl. One of the kittens still had a very fresh pink umbilical so we deduced that they were no older than 24 hours, perhaps even less. Phoned the vet to ask advice and he said either take to a cat rescue place or have a go at rearing them ourselves with their support. We decided to draw up an action plan and my daughter and I are taking it in turns to feed (when she is not at work) and so far they (and us) have made it through two nights despite warning from the vet that they may not make it over the first 24 hours. We have no idea if they actually got colostrum off mum before she died but I think perhaps they did. So far so good! :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:

What a challenge! Good on you for giving it a go.
-
Arrrrr .... Luckylady, wishing you lots of luck with the little family :fc:
Well done for taking them on. :trophy:
-
Well done for taking on such a big challenge! :fc: they do ok. What are your plans for them? Will they replace their mum as farm cat?

Possibly will keep one or two of them but not all five. Will rehome them. Anyone interested? ;)

Thats brought tears to my eyes, so horrid to loose thier mum but thats nature......anyway, hope it all works out for you... :fc:

I agree Sandy, its a bitter sweet story. So glad that luckylady has taken them on, Im sure that there are many out there who would not have bothered and left the kittens to die. Good luck on rearing them ll, and please post some piccies when you are able. Its the time of year when I get kitten broody, although with 4 cats already, another addition is out of the question!!!
-
Thanks for all your support folks.
Mary, it would never enter my head to leave anything to die if I thought realistically I could help it to survive, I don't know how anyone could. To my detriment my maternal instincts are sometimes too strong according to OH  . Done the human baby rearing so now its on to the animal ones, although the night feeds take their toll being older. Daughter does the midnight feed and I do the others during the night as she has to go to work the next day. Three nights in and all still surviving with no worries about them. Amber, the dog we rescued, helps with bottom stimulation and cleaning them - its lovely to see her all maternal too.
For those dubious, we never leave Amber alone with them and always hold them for her to clean.
Will get some pics up asap but camera battery needs charging so I'll go put that on now. :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:

  looking forward to baby pictures

Despite our efforts we lost one of the kittens overnight :'( . Vet said we have done nothing wrong and it just wasn't meant to live without it's mum. Three of the remaining four are very active, noisy, feeding well and pooing but the fourth, a little ginger tom, is rather subdued and we are not sure he is going to make it either :( . Because we had lost one I wanted the vet to check the others over and took them this morning. He was brilliant, each time he said 'are you doing this or that?' we could reply with a resounding 'yes' so we definitely know we are doing the best anyone could do for these little mites. He said we are doing just as good a job, if not better, than the cat charities could manage at the moment as they are inundated and because of that we have been given the practice's 'charity status' for these kittens meaning we won't get charged for any consults. :trophy: for my vet. Also :trophy: for my daughter who is the poo queen - she can't half get these kittens to evacuate! ;D ;D
-
So sorry you lost one, its horrid, we have lost 3 pups over the past few years with our litters and that upsets me so much, but thats nature, and you are doing so very well  , I hope you keep us updated and eventualy show us the pictures of 4 very grown up young cats :fc:
-

Sadly we won't Sandy. Two more succumbed to whatever is taking them and perhaps took their mother too. We have two left who seem somehow different to the other three in their attitude to life and are very feisty and doing things 5 day old kittens should be doing albeit not with their mother. We are not confident yet that they will make it as the last two went downhill very quickly even though the vet saw them and gave them a clean bill of health in the morning. If these two survive we will be keeping them so wish us luck as I think that is what it is down to :( . Foolishly we have named them - Hector derived from Hannibal Lector as he clamps down on our fingers with his gums as though he is so hungry he could eat us and Mouse as she has markings under her nose like a mous(e)tache ;D . :fc: :fc: :fc: for these two little ones.
-
:( :fc: :fc: Arhhhhh, its hard on the heart strings...good luck :fc: :fc:
-
I hope the remaining two grow up to be happy and healthy farm cats :cat: Well done for taking them on a - big job and never easy to raise such young babies.
-
:fc: they survive and well done to you and your daughter for putting so much effort and care and love into them
Dans
-
good luck with the survivors. we took on a feral kiten via cats protection and two years on "Mouse" is a much loved part of the family and a fearsome rat (and sadly yesterday swallow) catcher. :fc:
-
Not an easy job but do hope the rest survive :fc:
-
Well that is one week down and now over 48 hours since the others were lost. Thankfully these two are showing no signs of whatever it was the others and mum succumbed to. They are feeding, burping, peeing, pooing and sleeping well and are very active and noisy when awake. We have also had our first purr  out of them. Keeping fingers very tightly crossed :fc:
-
:fc: for Hector and Mouse
-
What little cuties  Sending them lots of 'growing up big and strong' wishes.
-
   so hope they make it!!
-
So upset - since posting the photo Hector has taken a turn for the worse. He has taken hardly any of his last feed just now and is very lethargic, the same as his siblings were. I think we are going to lose him during the night. Alarm set for 2.30 for next feed and I'm dreading it. :'(
-
Keeping Hector in thoughts :fc:

I have my fingers and toes crossed, for this morning.

Much as expected we lost little Hector during the night :'( . Mouse is active and feeding this morning, having burped, pooed, wee'd and purred but, as we have found out with the others, that means nothing. Going to take him to the vet again this morning despite them all having seen one on Saturday. The vet did warn me last Tuesday that they'd probably not survive as we don't know what mum died of and we don't know if any of them got colostrum. Does anyone know if a week old kitten can be given antibiotics?
-
Oh, I'm sorry
You're giving them the best chance you could - they wouldn't have had any hope without you.
I don't know about the antibiotics, but the vets will
-
 so sorry.......I doubt the vet will find anything, I think they can have anti biotics...but I am no vet.....we took a tiny pup to the vet but we took the wrong one and its sibling died in a similar way, the mum actualy rejected that pup so they know..... :(
-
Awww, how upsetting all this for you, but you know you have done everything you can to give them the best chance. Lets hope Mouse makes it then at least all of your efforts won't have gone to waste.
-
You were right HGL, the vet found nothing but thought it worth while covering Mouse with antibiotics just in case it helps. Not knowing what took mum and siblings he thinks it unlikely that Mouse will survive either but I am not giving up on the little fella. He is sleeping now with a rolled up fluffy sock for company and I keep popping my hand in the box to check hot water bottle temp and to give him a gentle rub/nudge to simulate movement from mum and siblings. Just hope he has enough fight left in him to pull through.
-
:bouquet: Sorry Luckylady but you are doing all you possibly could .... must be really upsetting :'(
Keeping everything crossed for little Mouse and you. :cat: :fc:
-
:-* sooo truely hope he pulls through..maybe the anti biotics will do the trick

Hi
Hugs to you and kitten

Thanks for all your support everyone.
Whilst I was out this evening taking my mother-in-law to see Land Army Girls Lights Out at our local mini theatre (brilliant by the way - highly recommend if you get chance) my lovely daughter was on Mouse duty. He is very active and eating well so far. She discovered that after his feed letting him snuggle into the side of her neck sets him off purring and soothes him to sleep as he can feel her pulse which he will be missing from mum and siblings. Guess who'll be doing that at 2.30 in the morning! :tired:
-
I hope that little Mouse keeps going as well as now :-*
-
You are doing so well, I look first thing to see how mouse is doing. :fc: it will only be for a short time and he will be over the night feeds......2 weeks time I suspect? Not sure as he is being hand reared
-

Sorry if I missed your 'first thing' check HGL. Mouse is still doing ok except for constipation. We massage his little bottom and his sides for hours but still not producing anything. Picking up catalax from the vet shortly so will let him lick a dose of that off my finger. Apparently they can get constipated when teething and he is showing signs of that. Would have thought AB's may have loosened him up a bit though. Fingers crossed he'll produce us a nice golden nugget today! ;D

Hope little mouse is doing ok and has managed to poo!
You must be near to us, I saw the signs all over the village for this production on my way to work all last week
-
:fc: ....funny how poo is so interesting to animal keepers.....I inpect my dogs poo all the time :innocent:
-
Yey! :excited: The golden nugget has arrived. Hard work for the poor little mite (too much info, I know ;) ). He scweemed and scweemed and scweemed and is now flat out sleeping on his back in his box. Of course, he produced the golden nugget after I had just picked up the catalax from the vet ::) .

We are all rooting for him

Its a Yorkshire company called Badapple Theatre. They are on tour at the moment so if you get chance to go I highly recommend it. It is so funny.

:excited: yay. crossing everything that he makes it.

Poor little mite, got everything crossed, has the vet said at what age you can breath a sigh of relief.

Vet didn't give any indication when we may loosen the finger crossing, nor did he say how long he has to be on the AB's. Don't think he expects him to make it. Not the usual vet I see. Little Mouse is starting to open his eyes now - another milestone! ;D
-
THats good.......give him a hot water bottle covered in something fluffy and not too hot, he will feel more comforted when you are not cuddling him....I remember the psycholodgy study re monkey babies who were not with thier mums, the ones that had cuddly toys thrieved even the ones that were given less food.... :fc: :fc: :fc:
-

Already have HGL. The litter had a fluffy hot water bottle under the covers in their box right from the start and as soon as we were left with only Mouse he was given a little toy companion - a 5 inch purple hippo!! ::) He also has a small wheat bag, which we heat in the microwave, wrapped in a fluffy sock to snuggle against and this is about the same size as him so his sleep nest isn't lonely for him. He's not going to know whether he is a human, hippo or sock when he grows up!
Must have accidentally turned off my alarm for 2.30 night feed last night and woke in a panic at 3.30. Phew! he was still fast asleep himself. Woke him to feed him and then he wouldn't go back to sleep for another hour. He was climbing, mewing, purring. Had to leave him to drop off himself as if I'd snuggled him on me I may have fallen back to sleep and squashed him.
We can now see beautiful blue eyes as he started to open them late yesterday though still squinting through them.
All good so far but still keeping those fingers crossed :fc:
-
aww, i'm really glad he still seems to be doing well, :fc: still crossed for him
-
Luckylady, Mouse is a Lucky kitten......you have it all sorted!! :fc:
-
Keeping my fingers crossed too :fc:
Will he keep his blue eyes, or is it like human babies, they get their colour in due course?
-
I think its like human babies Jaykay but it will be interesting to see whether they turn yellow, amber or green. :cat:
-
:fc: . I sleep with our pups when we have any and when the first one opens its eyes it usualy watches me all the time!!
-
Is there an update on Mouse LL?
-
Mouse is thriving Mary. Putting weight on by the hour it seems. Feeding every 3 hours during the day and goes 4 - 5 hours overnight if he takes a good late evening feed. As he no longer has litter mates we are now trying to encourage his activity to strengthen his limbs. He is very wobbly on his legs - a bit like a stick insect's sway. His ears are starting to fold out and his eyes are properly open. Even better news is that he is providing us with plentiful golden nuggets without a struggle, little treasure that he is! Further pic attached of mouse as he sleeps with his wheat bag rolled sock as his snuggle pal.
-
Awww, such a lovely picture. Its good to see that he seems to be thriving
-
  , I have hay fever eyes seeing that photo.....not soppy enough to be tears ...........surely not tears :innocent:

Don't be embarrassed - we are all a little teary eyed hearing this story.
-
I just hope he makes it, looks promising
-
He is starting to play with our fingers!! :excited: and loves his tummy tickling!! :excited: We are so flippin attached now  I refuse to lose him at this stage. Don't care is he keeps me up all night playing if thats what it takes. He has a purr on him like a pneumatic drill and his little claws have developed some substance to them when pummelling!! :o Fingers crossed all continues well in the Mouse camp. Thanks all for your support and interest. Much appreciated.
-
 , this is the first post I check..think most of us are willing him well...you are doing such a great job fo little Mouse, :excited:
-
Me too ;D
-
Prepare your 'aawwwwwws'! ;D
-
They really are awww moments. You must be so attached to him now. How long before you think he is out of danger?
-
Still have a few hurdles to leap yet Bionic. He is still on the antibiotics (a week today) so asking the vet today how much longer he needs to stay on them (seeing vet with dog this afternoon). Taking him off them will be a trying time. Also weaning off the milk may be a precarious time. A good few weeks yet before we can relax, I think. We have the golden nugget problem again so he has had liquid paraffin this morning. Awaiting the results (hopefully on daughter's shift ;) )!!! ;D
-
Awwww I keep checking in to see how you are both doing. Mouse is so lucky to have you.
Dans
-
Awwww, that cute little picture has got to me, bless him and you both
-
Thanks all. I know you would all have done the same given the same circumstances otherwise you wouldn't be checking in on his progress.
-
Oh he is sooooo sweet. Not showing my daughter these piccies .... she already wants another kittie. :cat:
He is going to be so special to you. Come on little Mouse, you can do it.
-
What a little sweetheart  I'm so glad he's doing well - we'll keep rooting for him
-
Quick update - Mouse is still thriving albeit a tad constipated :o He has cut some teeth. He is awake and playing more so now has a play box as well as his sleep box. Now responding to our voices with mewing and sits and watches us if we are near his box. He sleeps a bit longer overnight - I only had to wake for one feed last night :tired: . Vet says keep on AB's for another week.
Alls well in the Mouse camp! :cat:

  , sounds good so far :fc:

Good little Mouse     Keep it up.

This is such a beautiful heart-warming story, Im sitting here with tears in my eyes. I just love cats sooooo much.

How's little Mousey ? :fc:
Sorry, been so busy haven't had time to log in. Mouse is doing very well and putting weight in at an alarming rate. He is playing much more, chewing our fingers and wrestling with his purple hippo pal. He scratched his own ear with his back leg today but we don't know if it was intentional or not as it looked rather unco-ordinated ;D . He is due to come off the antibiotics this week so we are keeping our fingers crossed all will be ok. He pees for England when we toilet him but is still a little erratic in the poo department ;) .Taking his bottle well and is going through the night now though he is still in his box bed on my bedroom floor just in case he wakes up. He let out a cute little squeak with a sneeze just as I was falling asleep last night and I couldn't help but smile. If we lost him now I'd be heartbroken. Keeping everything crossed :fc:
-
 :cat:

:fc: :fc: I was a bit worried as you had not posted.....as if you haven't got anything better to do... :innocent:

Good for Mouse. Love the icon too :roflanim:

Funny, poo is so important indicator to being in good or bad health,
Great that things are getting better and better
-
Ha, good for little Mouse :D
-
Mouse has continued to thrive since coming off the AB's on Tuesday. He is doing everything a 3.5 week kitten should be doing - playing more, recognising when he is peeing and pooing so we have the litter tray at hand and put him straight in, is wrestling with his little hippo toy and our hands. He has cut some mighty sharp little teeth and hasn't yet learned how to retract his claws yet so our hands are taking the brunt. Best of all - I'm getting a full nights sleep again as he is fed about 11 then he doesn't wake until at least 6. One last hurdle to get over with the weaning but need to get him lapping from a saucer of his milk first so we are starting with a teaspoon at feed time then we will gradually lower it so he has to do the work. All is still well in Mouse camp.
-
What a cutie pie.....think he has stolen all ourhearts on here, well most of us anyway (not so sure about the male TASers :innocent: )
-
Oh he is just so gorgeous and seems to be coming on very well thanks to the way you are looking after him
-
Just love his name, a born fighter this little chap !
-
Hi not been on for a while, sooo glad he is still going from strengh to strengh. Well done, and the picture is soo cute,.
-
You're doing so well with him  What a little cuteness
-
Well done you he looks great  all continues well in the poop department :-J
-
Just read this thread. What a star you are and what a little fighter Mouse is. Such a sad, happy, sad, sad, sad, happy happy HAPPY story. He's so beautiful. Well done you.
-
Awww! Little Mouse had his first solid food tonight. So proud ;) . He's a little handful now - climbs out of his box and goes on a wobbly run around the kitchen floor, wriggles and squirms whilst we try to toilet him though he nearly has the hang of the litter tray just needing a little assistance to get started, attempting to pounce on things that only he can see and, all in all, being a proper little kitten. He is also getting quite fussy about washing his feet and chest (nothing else mind). I think we can start to tentatively uncross fingers and toes :relief: .
-
Awwwww ;D
How old is he now?
We might need more pics ;D
-
Awww bless him. Glad he is getting on so well after all your hard work

Our little boy is growing up! No more bottle  . Has his cimicat milk in a saucer and has kitten food with it. Is using his litter tray for pees and poos but occasionally forgets. OH picked him up for a cuddle yesterday and he went very still and glazed over - you know the look. I knew what he was about to do but was feeling a little wicked so didn't let on. I haven't laughed so much in ages :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim: . Soaked to his undies :roflanim: . Ooooops!

Little Mouse is a very good looking kitten

He is lovely......and glad he's doing fine thanks to all you and your family's efforts......he is one very special and lucky boy!

Im with Sandy on that one!! He is one very lucky Mouse and what a handsome little boy he is too!!
The perfect end to a very sad story!
-
Hasn't he got amazing colour eyes! Really deep jade green.
-
He is absolutely gorgeous
-
Just over 7 weeks old now. Was using our legs to practice climbing up :o so bought him his own climbing post. He knows his name and comes to the bell at his feed time (something we have trained all out cats to do so they come in at night). Is getting the gist of a firm 'no' but his naughty side often overrides it. Such a shame he can't play outside yet considering the beautiful weather. 1st vaccination next week.
-
Arhh   , he is hanging on tight to the post bless him, so tiny, we all want to give him a cuddle, one special kitten....
-
     .... well done to you all :trophy:

oh that has made me cry! I hadnt seen this post before, so so sad but wonderful that he survived, what a relief to get to the end of that thread and find he is doing so well. Good on you, he is very lucky.
-
Bless him so glad he is doing so well. He is one lucky little guy to have you looking after him.
-
Oh, look at him climb  What a sweetheart
-
Words fail me. He is just so exquisite. Congratulations on all you have done for little Mouse. He is one very very lucky puddycat!!!!
-
Thanks all.
Mary, how is Henry's leg? :cat:
-
Worn out after a tough morning playing. 9 weeks old and seems to have doubled in size in two weeks! He's going to be one big puss.
-
Oh what a cutie. He'll certainly be a big boy, just look at those paws!
Dans
-
Definitely looks bigger than 9 weeks. In fact looks the same size as my 11 year cat ;D

If I hadn't known the exact date we found the newborn litter, I wouldn't have believed he was only nine weeks either. ;D
-
Yep, those are huge paws - that's going to be one great big Mouse ;D
I love the way little animals completely flake out after they've been playing

Looking at that gorgeous boy, don't you feel it's been worth all the effort (and heartache)? He's delightful

Such a lovely story and a wonderful lucky cat

Oh most definitely Pedwardine.
Took him for his first vaccination today and the vet was surprised at his size for nine weeks. Said he was the size a Maine Coon kitten would be at his age and added 'in fact he may have some Maine Coon in him'. If that's the case then mama feral must have lain down for a bit of posh ;)
-
ha ahaa...well looks like mice are not going to be so lucky

Beast of a size for 10 weeks! Darling daughter isn't stretching him, he's just resting on her hands.

He has such a mischievous face :)

Wow, he is huge :) And gorgeous
-
And he's really FLUFFY too!! I do love fluffy cats. He is such a handsome little boy and so very lucky to have you. He's going to be a biggun by the look of him. Henry is that size and he's over a year old now!
-
Thanks all.
Mary, how is Henry's leg? :cat:
Henry is absolutely fine now, you can hardly tell which leg was operated on as the fur has grown back very well. OH and I were only talking about it this afternoon, it seems such a long time ago now, but was an awful experience for us all.
-
14 weeks old today and already as big as our 5 year old female cat and his limbs and paws are bigger than the beefy 5 year old male cats we have. He is like a mischievous child at the moment and has us in stitches at his antics. ::) :cat:
-
Brilliant, just like a leggy teenager!!
-
He is gorgeous, all arms and legs ;D
-
What a star ;D
Maybe he's got some Maine Coon in him?

Wow, he's long enough to be act as an excellent draft excluder when he lies against your doors! He is absolutely gorgeous
-
What a gorgeous looking chap! Just came across this thread, so great that his story at least is a happy one!
-
Maybe he's got some Maine Coon in him?
That is what we are thinking as he has other Maine Coon characteristics too. I definitely know he came from a bog standard feral mother though so daddy must have been a bit of posh!! ;)
Wow, he's long enough to be act as an excellent draft excluder when he lies against your doors! He is absolutely gorgeous
Brilliant! Think I'll start training him now :roflanim:

How did I miss this post?
So well done Luckylady - what a great job you've done (and what heartache) he is absolutely super.
-
Mouse is the image of our outdoor cat 'Mighty Mac'. He came from a farm too - not exactly feral but pretty rough living (they don't believe in using vets). Such a lovely story, I'm so pleased your hard work paid off
-
I, too , missed this thread, but read it all the way through and loved it. He is going to be a really gorgeous cat, and well done you for keeping him alive against all the odds. He will be really special to you always
-
He certainly is a special to us DBE. He's teething at the moment though and, boy, do we know it. He is now as big as our adult cats at just 5 months old and they don't appreciate his Cato (Inspector Clouseau's butler) style ambushes. He hides behind doors and flies through the air at them then runs away. The others are very patient with him despite his size and it is easy to imagine them just rolling their eyes ::) .
Most recent pic - so angelic ;)
-
I love his white bib and long curly whiskers :)
-
He is getting more gorgeous every day
-
So very gorgeous. I wonder if he knows how lucky he was to be born on your land.

He is so very special and a credit to you and your families very hard work

Thank you for your lovely comments. He is a lovely kitten though rather naughty at the moment. Think he is paying us back for having him castrated on Monday. He gets up to all sorts of cheeky kitten stuff but has no idea how big and heavy he is now. The other cats run a mile when they see him awake as they know they are going to get flattened by him pouncing on them. He is nearly five and a half months old now and much bigger than our female adult cats and the same size as our adult males. He is going to be a beast when he is full grown. Hope he stays as soppy and cuddly as he is now with me.

One very special cat...he thinks and possibly is the ruler of your home!

Thought some of you might like to know Mousey Boy is 1 year old today! He is a happy, healthy boy who loves a cuddle - still snuggles in to my neck like he did when he was tiny, tilting his head to get the best position. He is such a big boy and makes my arms ache if I hold him for any length of time. He is still a little timid in the big outdoors but this means he doesn't stray far from the house which is fine by me until he matures in his head a bit more. Anyway, here is a photo I took to celebrate his 1st birthday. :cake: He is a bit sleepy in the photo and is normally very wide-eyed.

Happy Birthday Mouse for yesterday! What a handsome boy he is and like others, I can't believe that a year has gone so quickly! Only seems a few months ago that his survival was touch and go and we were all rooting for him to survive.
