Title: gilts and milk
Post by: patmci on July 14, 2009, 04:59:47 pm
hi I am just wondering do gilts not have much milk for there first litter but get more after that. I have just been looking at some pics of oldspot sows and their teats were dropping a lot further down than our gilts did. Is it just that it is their first litter that they teats are not lower down.

Regards Patrick

Quite right Patrick - a Gilts teats will develop more after the first litter and after a couple of litters with up to fourteen piglets hanging off them a Sows udder is apt to sag and will not fully return to their former shape. (I'm sure the ladies in the forum may have a few comments to make on this question, but to my knowledge they don't make bra's for pigs). Hope this helps
