I'm sure it was know by another name once. It's just bugging me. Everyone I've asked say it's always been called Soreen. Am I losing the marbles?
-
Maybe you are confusing it with Harvo? :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malt_loaf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malt_loaf)
-
It used to be called (by me) a miserable alternative to a proper after school snack which squashes to nothing when your mum cuts you what she laughably referred to as a 'slice'. I used to stick it in the gap behind the kitchen cupboards.....:-O
-
My mother seemed to have never ending supply of malt loaf. when I was young. Can still see it spread with butter, on the table!! Never knew it by any other name, thought.
-
I think I may be talking out of my arse on this one. I went on the Soreen website and as it's been made and called Soreen for 75 years after the family that started it and I'm only 43 then it doesn't really add up that it was named otherwise. Doh :dunce:
I like it in small measures only. Tried (as advised on the packet) it toasted and spread with urlyburly (utterlybutterly) t'other day. Bleurgh! It was horrible. Won't be doing that again.
See I am losing it. I'm 44!

Tea-time favourites. To get a decent slice you have to cut it horizontally length wise , with thickly spread butter and a nice cup of tea . followed by crumpets swimming in butter and marmite , or toast and patum pepperum ( gentlemans rellish) and then some homemade madelenes or lange du chat and brandy snaps filled with whipped cream. 'scuse me while I go and wipe my chin :excited: :excited: :excited:
-
I LOVE Soreen malt loaf, spread with butter its like a squishy taste of heaven!! If anyone has a foolproof (has to be foolproof, i'm a crap baker) recipe for a homemade version I'd love to try it. :yum:
-
I think Paul Hollywood did one in the bread series that ended on Monday , so it should be on BBC2 I player now, I hope there will be a book out, :excited:
-
oooh, thanks for that Tiz, I managed to catch a couple of those episodes and have put the book on my amazon wishlist (long with a thousand other books!). I'll make sure that I definately buy it.

For anyone else whos interested in the book

That's really made me laugh ;D its impossible to cut, my 11 year old is addicted to the stuff and I have to try and gently saw it to keep it unsquashed.
-
I've always known it simply as Malt loaf. Never really knew a brand name until I started buying it again in the last few years. I love it :-)
-
i love soreen, i also the the malt bread you get in ireland called veda bread, that u toasted...mmm

I love the way malt loaf sticks to your teeth, it means you get seconds and thirds during the day without actually eating any more bread! You cant get it over here, so Ill have to remember it for when the family next come visiting!
-
I like it but then not that much, the butter has to drip down your chin, messy stuff and my mum used to call it Bara Brith, she was welsh and thats what we thought it was!!!
-
Barra brith is more just a fruit loaf with the dried fruit being soaked in tea , but no malt ? , sort of halfway between bread and cake really . Not sure of the difference in recipes , google would sort that , but they are different , both lovely though . Mind you , don't eat any malt loaf from behind certain peoples cupboards !

Hee hee :excited: yes watch what you get with your fly cup in our place! Youre safe as I'm old enough to refuse the offer of malt loaf and we sold the house with the malt loaf insulation :innocent:
-
Lol , what a relief !
I pity the poor bugger that moved that cupboard !
-
I used to like Barra Brith better than Malt loaf.....as she lived in Llay and used to visit Chester and the "pool" we also got scouse quite often..funny how our memories get confused...my mum was a good cook and I remember she said her mum was, when I spoke to my eldest cousin she remembers my nan giving my pop a bit of dusty fatty bacon out the larder with a dry crust to accompany it!! :innocent:
-
My ma hated bread and dripping and used to drop her's in my Grandad's wellies!
Remembered just now that Grandad came home from work one night and made himself a corned beef sandwich. Got told the next day that it was dog food on the plate not corned beef. Bleugh! Pretty similar actually come to think of it...
-
Its been years since I had corn beef frittes :P
-
I'm guessing that's a good thing?
-
oh yuk, my mum went through a stage of a) trying to make her own malt loaf and it was always raw and gooey in the middle and then b) sending me to school with corned beef sarnies when I was little, this thread is resurfacing old traumas, I need to have a lie-down to recover!!
-

That sounds like what's called overnight teabread in my house... Lovely stuff.
-

I loved corn beef fritters but dare not have them now......must be all fat!!
-
I might be imaging it but did Sunblest not make a malt loaf that was in packaging very similar to the Sorren one?
-
I dunno. That does sound possible. Sorry for the trauma Plums!
-
My Father asked me the same thing today after I served him a slice of buttered Soreen. He subsequently remembered the (similar type of) malt loaf was called ‘Youma’
-
I’m 62 and as far as I can remember it’s always been Soreen in my lifetime. I do remember the Sunblest one too.
Wikipedia says
Rikki Sorensen developed the loaf in conjunction with a business partner Green, hence the name, Soreen.
-
Why on earth has this been dredged up after 6 years? It wasn't too exciting the first time around..... ???

Because a new member saw it and had a contribution to make.

Well obviously, but........
:merryxmas:
-
I have a loaf tin in my drawer with Youma indented on the side. A relic from my grandparents bakery. There is also a loaf tin with the family name on the side, the only one remaining from hundreds back in the day.
-
That's really weird - I was just thinking about this the other day, since I was brought up on malt loaf but also don't remember Soreen. Perhaps we had a supermarket own brand one? (The Lidl one is revolting BTW - are any of the other supermarket versions any good?).
I like to spread butter on it and then 'toast' it in the microwave until the butter is really hot and melty.
-
Just looked online and it is, apparently, the original malt loaf which was started by a man named Sorensen and one called Green - hence Soreen.

Because if you search on Google for 'what did soreen used to be called' this is the first result. And a lot of people landing here don't see the date of the last post. And we don't tend to lock old topics.
Besides, I found it quite exciting both times around. :D
