I am a new owner of a lovely JR terrier and he has a new-found lump on his ear, which looks like a little brown spot/wart kinda thing. The ear around it feels like a spot - a little lump like when you get stung. Is it a tick? And if so, how do I get rid of it? Yuk (in anticipation)

if it is a tick you will need to treat it! there are many different ideas on treating it, go with your gut on this and dont do anything you dont feel comfortable with, or get your vet to remove it! many flea spot-ons also deter ticks!
if it is a spot or a wart you will need to keep an eye on it just in case it develops into something more ominous, if you are really worried consult with your vet!

Thanks for that! It's difficult to find sound advice - I found this http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-remove-a-tick/ which looks gross, but it hasn't worked so far! Newbie dog owner, so I guess I'll get used to it! :-[

i also forgot to mention petroleum jelly works very well at smothering the tick! as well as that,
it wont hurt the dog either just use a big dollop of it!

If you do get it out remember to make sure the head is out too or it will become infected. Horrid little things these are! yuk

I ended up putting some proprietary gunk over it, then he played with his sister, and now it's gone (but left a lump) so either a) he just has the head of the tick still in him b) his sister has been the recipient of the tick when it's jumped ship.
Have put some more gunk on today - but I read that it usually leaves a lump either way - can anyone confirm this? (Sorry to be sucha wimp about this, but this is my first dog and first tick scenario :P)

check the dog-bed/sofa or werever the dog sleeps, also keep an eye out around your house!
he could have dropped it outside though!
ticks dont tend to jump-ship, they prefer to spend some time digesting their last meal first, then they climb up the long grass and wait for dinner(your dog) to brush up against them and they grab on and take a bite........ dinner is served!

dropped off where though? You need to find it or it'll crawl into one of your guests beds and what will that do for trade HE HE ;D

Thankfully he is not allowed in guests rooms or even upstairs although he would if he had half a chance, must have dropped off in his bed!!!! We saw loads and loads of Blue berries while out so I hope to be fit enough to pick them soon, may get a walking stick to help me!!!

If it's in his bed it'll go back on one of them. Best check them again.
