Does a tractor need to be road registered to move it between fields or to the petrol station or would I need to stock up on jerry cans?
-
Yes..... And insured !

It needs a tax disc, and it's free. I know this because we're about to tax our's!

You'll need the registration documents to get a tax disc, and as 90driver says you should make sure you have insurance cover.

Is tractor insurance expensive?

Nearly all tractors run on rebated red diesel which tends to be only available at a few rural garages. Most people have their own small supply in a tank or Jerry cans.

If your tractor is more than 25 years old you can take advantage of a vintage policy. I have four tractors on my small holding and have just renewed at less than £200 total for all 4. The cover includes agricultural use on my own land. .....not all vintage policies have this so beware. As others have said road tax is free so at subbing£50 a year to have it road legal why would you not, it so convenient for borrowing equipment from others or collecting materials.

For insurance try Walker and Midgly, thats who I am with, around £30-£40 per tractor ( I have 4 )
this covers agricultural use as well as showing. p.s. As long as tractors are 25 years or older.
