Title: Anyone got any dry land?
Post by: feldar on January 29, 2013, 04:56:57 pm
Has anyone missed this awful weather. I'm so fed up with me wellies getting sucked off and being beaten over at the feed trough by wet sheep. If i could move fast enough i'd get out the way! but the beggers go in for the kill and i get wedged between trough, sheep and firmly fixed in life -sucking mud.
I come at night looking like the bog monster, wet fringe flopping about. I must look like some kind of bag lady when i go down the shop for milk.
My car smells permenantly of wet dog well, two wet dogs. and my sheep look as bad as me, shagbags, manky and a bit mouldy at the edges.
Please, please can we have some dry weather soon.
Sorry winge over, i'm having a particuarly moany day. ;D

Oh Feldar I recognise everything that you have said. I am longing for some dry weather. I wish someone could predict some even if it is a way ahead. It would at least give us something to look forward to.

Feldar , i know exactly how you feel .
Been tipping down all day here , and i am soaked to the skin .
Everywhere i look on the land is a sea of mud .
The times i have had to hunt for my socks in liquid mud ?, after a mud sucking boot removal , i can't count that high .
It must relent  some time surely , and i don't mean snow !
It is only when i see normal people , that i realise what a tramp i really am now !
Nearly always wet , covered in crap and mud , clothes in tatters and shreds , stinking of horses , wet dogs , onions and garlic .
I myself don't stink though , i had a wash last March , so no problems there .
I think i heard that it is meant to be dry tomorrow , or is my mind playing tricks on me ?

Feldar, I think you've described me to a T.  We're all soggy inside and out and my OH says I look like a sack of tatties all the time.  ::)

Funny though, I can hear that little bird somewhere singing even when it's a dreadful day and it reminds me Spring isn't far away, just hold on a bit longer everyone.

It's ok to moan by the way, helps relieve the stress  ;)

I usually love the different seasons, the weather and yes, even the mud.

BUT ..... today, I have had enough.

Pouring down here  :gloomy:  . Can hardly stay on my feet to see to the chickens, fed up of wiping dogs down and yep, I've got that wonderfully glamorous mud covered look down to perfection.

We are in the process of surfacing our drive and paths to the house so even these are just MUD .... need your gogs on to reach the car and can't get the children onto the minibus without them getting their uniforms wretched !!!!!

Not just you Feldar.

It's the same here. I'm totally fed up of it now. Had a real struggle moving an IBC for the pigs' water this morning as our tractor is broke and the normally unstoppable Land Rover is as wet, muddy and knackered as I am. Roll on spring.

At least the snow hid the mud now it is back with a vengeance, got pallets down as stepping stones and that definitely helps. :gloomy:

Feldar that about sums it up the only thing you missed is that our fields and track ways look like the Somme on a wet morning in 1913, muddy and rutted as the tractor is the only waqy to get feed to the lower fields for the pigs etc.

But I too keep hearing that bird song and cannot wait much longer for the Spring,  it will arrive eventually.

We haven't had it as bad as a lot of folk but it's still dismal. Our hens are developing webbed feet. Blowing a hoolie here tonight - maybe blowing away all the water  :fc:

Mind you, it was nice this morning - dry and mild. And a bird singing :sunshine:

Not too bad here in the Highlands, but we did not get the summer rain, nor the latest snow. But gusts of up th 80mph forecast for tonight and worried about the big trees next to the house :(
I won't complain though as lots of you have had the worst of it and to be honest we have got off lightly
:fc: it drys up soon for you all

Snow melted and ice going, windy as f**k and getting muddy again but loving playing with the kids in the goat shed - clears away any winter blues - now see the plus side to kidding in January

Strong winds here as well. I did say to my OH that at least it would help dry out the ground.  "Unless it brings in more rain," he replied.  But it surely can't last much longer.

Not so bad for me because the goats are yarded, although OH does have to wade across to take the food in and the goats hate it.  Hoping to get it cleared tomorrow.      to all of you who are having to cope with waterlogged fields.

My OH is fighting a battle to finish the barn roof this weekend.  Poor love is having to do it all himself as i am laid up since last Monday with a torn hamstring  :( .  whatever the size of roof, the sheep will come in if they are dry enough.  to leave them any longer in the mud will be cruel. we want them warm dry and settled

Nightmare here. Mud so deep I'm constantly having "out of welly" experiences. Can't get across pens to put new straw in the arks, so feeling really bad about the sows not being as comfortable as they should.
Waterlogged pens that haven't recovered from the summer bashing, despite being rested, and I have sows with litters waiting to be weaned in the barn, but nowhere to put them. Rain is still relentless, and looks like continuing into next week. Miserable.
Still, drove to Hereford yesterday and entire fields were completely under water. Thank God it's not that bad here. Everything is relative.

Glad it's not just me suffering!! ;D  but i know some have had it worse than me. I'm just so knackered in the evenings, and i think it's fighting through the mud that does it. I thought i'd get fitter, but i just get more knackered, then fall asleep on the sofa as soon as dinner is over! i am a cheerful soul no doubt about it.
But yes the birds are singing here too, so new life will start soon. I just hope they have a better breeding season than last year, poor things got flooded out then too.

It is horrific on the south coast too, I have never seen the land this wet before, ever, including the winter of 2000.   Looking at the forecast, it is wave after wave after wave of intense rain sweeping over the country, almost every day.   We had 20 mm on Saturday night, 15 mm on Monday and 12 mm last night, it just goes on and on and on.    I just feel so sorry for the poor pigs, looking so forlorn with their feet permanently in 6 inches of ooze.   They have even given up digging.    I would love to be able to explain to them why I can't do anything about it, particularly my 4 month old babies who only have another 2 months to go before their trip to the seaside, and who have now spent nearly their entire lives in these awful conditions.     Did anyone else see the TV programme on reasons for UK's extreme weather - very depressing indeed.     I guess we will all appreciate it very much more than usual if ever we do get any nice dry weather again and a normal spring and fresh grass and that sort of thing!   Here's hoping - Tamsaddle

:sunshine: here this morning - the strong wind is making the water in the fields look like the sea. Dan says he's always wanted a seafront property but this wasn't what he had in mind  ;D

Rain foecast for tomorrow then pretty much dry until Sunday - please let the forecast be right :fc:

Wed 30th - just been out tidying up in the fields, it's worse than I thought in areas I thought were ok and the river banks are so sodden they are all collapsing into the river which has been super high with all this melting snow.  Where's March? Can't come soon enough.

Think its much the same all over the UK :raining: :gloomy:  blowing a gale and squally showers here today. The outlook according to the luvely carol this morning remains ................unsettled....... so batten down the hatches and dream of a warm dry spring.

:sunshine: but no dry land in sight, the water is still running down the hill...the ducks are having fun destroying the last of what used to be a lawn. If it wasn't such a freezing wind I might have started tidying outside but came back in after half a minute :P . :&>

  Hi Feldar,

Same here on the Dorset coast :raining: :raining: with OH alternately  and  :gloomy: .  Gave up today and locked the GFD's in the barn before their field is completely trashed.  9 inches of mud around the field shelter ::) , could easily lose a small child in it  :o :o .  The Shetlands were brought in last week (their field more exposed, on clay and even worse), and they seem very content now to be in stables with a concrete pen outside.  It is certainly much easier for me :relief: .
Snowdrops and early daffs are out, I reckon another 3 weeks of mud...

Meant to add.
We shoud rename our place 'Pallets R Us'.  It is the only way we can keep out of the mud. ::) .
Had visitors on Monday night and the woman stepped into the hall and said 'I have MUD on my shoes! Er, well, yes... :-[   I wonder if they will visit again...I suppose we just get used to it.

Shropshire's pretty soggy as well.  Even though my goats are yarded, their yard was a sea of mud.  It was all cleared out today but the concrete still has a mud coating.  I did think about pressure washing but my OH pointed out that there is so much water around already, we didn't need any more.

Rain came down so hard this morning i got stuck in the polytunnel with the ewe lambs. I couldn't see accross the field it was raining that hard. me and the lambs were just standing there waiting for it to blow over. Finally i made a dash for it leaving them looking out the door. Hubby said they were still in there later on munching hay and chewing cuds. They are obviously not going to come out until it gets dryer.
Lucky them! some of us have to go to work to feed them :gloomy:

Glad I didn't have the goat yard pressure washed now.  The amount of  :raining: we had has washed the yard clean - the bits I can see that aren't under water anyway.
