Title: Scottish National Poultry Show 19th - 20th January 2013
Post by: Big Light on December 27, 2012, 08:26:52 am
The Scottish National Poultry Show 2013 is on at the Lanark Auction Mart (ML11 9SZ) on Saturday 19Th - Sunday 20Th January 2013 entries are now closed but worth a look for those that want to learn more about the different breeds. There's usually something in the region of 3,500 exhibits

Judging is on the Saturday morning / midday so if not exhibiting better coming later in the afternoon or on sunday to see the results.

There are sales classes with birds for sale at a fixed price - usually not that cheap but good quality - theres also a catalogue so if you fancy a breed you can contact those that keep the breed either near to you or those that have the better quality birds ( depending on your needs). It usually a couple of quid on the door to get in but a good learning experience and plenty of experienced hands to ask questions of.

Yes Anke, ducks and geese too. It is worth going, the catalogue is great because you can look up so many breeders, and it is rare to get so many poultry in one place in Scotland.

The bit I loved, when they held it at the Royal Highland Centre, and at Perth, there would be a bus hired from up north, all these people with their cages of chooks in the hold of the bus, and them all queuing to get back on the bus, after queuing to put the chooks in the hold... Amazing.

There's not a online catalogue for the selling birds. The catalogue is for the showing section, and will only be available at the show, but anyone who is listed as an exhibitor has their name and contact details in the catalogue, so it's really useful.

If you are looking to buy its better to go on Saturday, otherwise stuff might have been sold already! Some additional selling pens does come in on Sunday, but not as much as Saturday.

Mays, looking for some Hamburg's as I am down to only 1 hen and the cockerel.

I'm thinking of popping along on the Sunday for a couple of hours to get ideas of breeds to buy.  Any idea when would be the best time to show up?  Cheers!

Hmmmm, just heard the weather forecast... unlikely that I will be driving cross-country to Lanark this weekend... shame, I am really keen to get some geese and/ducks in the next couple of years, so was keen to see what's being bred locally...

I really want to go but I'm watching the forecast as I don't fancy a two hour drive both ways in bad weather. I suspect from what happyhippy just emailed me that the forecast to the Lanark area is worse than for Carnoustie too  :(

good can anyone recomend best time to go over on Sunday? do they close it for judging?

Theres no judging on the Sunday, it opens at 9am and i think lifting is about 2 - 2.30pm as people have long journeys.

Best to come down in the morning as you have lots to get round, there are facilities at the mart for lunch / or Lanark isn't far away hope that helps

Think too that there might be less showers/sellers due to the weather, seems to be worse west coast to central area last forecast I saw.

If anyone does go - if you could possibly locate any Steinbacher geese and get details of the breeders I am sure both Jaykay and myself would be extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Hi ya
Thank you for this site. It's actually the only place I could find the opening hours for the poultry show. :) It is my first poultry show in Scotland so I would like to get there in time. ;)

Looking forward to meet some people with similar interests. :) And look at a lot of beautiful birds.  ;D

On the Saturday morning all birds are usually penned and prepared by 9.30 at lastest, and its a bit chaotic. Judging starts at 10 am some of the Halls are closed then to allow the judges to do their job, judging usually finishes just after lunch time.

No, but I was only there for a little while, and they were still judging, so people were floating around in odd places. And they weren't selling catalogue's. So going back today to get a catalogue, see who won what, and see if anything new came in for sale this morning.

Got exactly what I wanted for sale yesterday- pleased to bits!

Goosepimple, there were a pair of Steinbacher geese for sale, but I was in the selling pens by 10:30 and they were already sold. I'll give you some contact details once I have the catalogue.

Well come on who went and what did you think, I went on the Sunday for a couple of hours for a look especially the Scots Grey bantams and the Wyandotte bantams. I met a couple of folk I knew who both did well with there birds and got a business card of the chap selling show cages.

I am afraid the snow (and more so the predicted showers that didn't really materialise until today)meant that I didn't make it  :-\ ... Can't afford to trash the car just now....

Yes Anke I was thinking along the same line but there was very little snow to speak of in the end, a lot of the southern exhibitors we're concerned about the long journey home what with the snow being forecast.
