Title: British Blue x Jersey Heifer for sale, Market Drayton
Post by: shropshire_blue on December 21, 2012, 06:49:06 pm
I have a 12 month old BBx Jersey heifer for sale. On grass over summer with supplementary feed, and now in barn/yard for winter.

Answers to name of Wendy, and talks with a very posh voice!  :innocent:  Viewing welcome...

Reason for sale is that we need the room for the increasing number of sheep, so the cattle are going.

I'm near Market Drayton, North Shropshire.  Make me an offer or she's going for meat along with the steer after new year.

Thanks,
Neil - 07974 353754

Sbom, I'm afraid I have no idea what she's worth ::) . Dairy farmer next door guessed £700 without seeing her.

I can deliver in plain wrapping so your OH will never know  ;)

Ta, but he's getting wise to me now and it's much harder to smuggle thing in unnoticed!
Bit out of our budget especially as I'm trying to convince him that zwartbles make great Christmas presents.
Hope she finds a nice home  :)

As far as I know it's a less severeley muscled version of the belgian blue, which is a double muscled beef breed.

Belgian

British

The Belgian blue had been bred so muscly that they couldn't calve naturally and most calves were born by caesarian, Brits bred it back to a sensible level of muscling, regained natural calving ability and renamed it the British Blue.

In this case used as a beef sire on a Jersey dairy cow.

The BB x Jersey is VSS's preferred cross for a house cow and if Wendy is a nice, well handled girl, then she would be a good buy for someone  :santa:

She certainly is!  She's booked in to the abattoir on Monday, so if you're interested give me a call asap!!

I'd far rather she went to someone as a house cow, as she's so cute!  She is pretty tame - definitely more smallholder cow than herd cow.  She's not halter trained, but today she followed me round the yard while I fed the sheep.  She'll run to a bucket, and even if I just yell "come on then cows".

My number is 07974 353754.

£500 for a jersey x 12 month old heifer is more than her meat value.....12 month old beef is ok but she is worth more alive....£280 -300 is whats being paid down here at the moment for BB x

So what do you think she's worth Val?  I'm a bit confused by your post...

Sorry Shropshire blue....it was a bit confusing eh!!! On prices it will very much depend on her shape etc. Some Jersey blue x look like hefty Jerseys!!!
I would think she is possibly about £300 tops....but that is uncertain.....it may be less in the market! You have to remember most bb crosses are not x Jersey, although a certain proportion are as a popular bull to use on a Jersey. Hope that helps a little?

At the risk of being shot down in flames ::) , i went to view wendy today,i took along a very experienced cow man to be my advisor(im pretty green regarding cattle)before we arrived i said to jim if shes not right, pull me out.Anyway we arrived at Neils place who took us into the shed,we were greeted by 2 of the friendliest cows i have come across. After a brief chat i paid my deposit,i didn't need to confer with Jim i was over the moon this cow was in such good condition and everything shropshire blue had said about her was spot on.On the journey home i said, well mate have i done well or what,he replied that cow would make at least £650 at market,so no wonder i was buzzing all the way home.Subject to the tb test shes all mine.shropshire blue those 2 beast are a credit to you.Paul

Thanks Paul!  I've had 'the chat' with Wendy about what will be expected of her when she meets Fred the bull, and she's a little nervous but excited at the same time.

Could you ask Jim what he reckons Arthur would be worth at market please?

Glad you're happy, and hope you enjoyed your dinner...
