I am using Carrs Billingtons, 18% dairy nuts. But a couple of mine do go through phases of sometimes refusing to eat the nuts, no idea why and what causes that... maybe just like my children - their eating like and dislikes change by the day at the moment too....

Mine won't eat dairy nuts when they are in season ???
But then normally mine won't eat soaked sugar beet, apples, bananas or grass ::) :goat: :goat: :goat: :goat:

I mix it with a bit of course mix then, and they will eat if nothing else shows up. Princesses :D

Hello,

Try 1st stage calf pellets, mine ( Boer, boer x and saanen ) go nuts for this and know this feed is good for meat and milk goats.

CW mine go through it and all of the nuts are left behind. But its only nuts. Everything else goes

CF who does the first stage ? I did try 1 calf nut and it was wasted. They tipped the buckets off the gates.

I'm feeding my boer kids and 2 Togg x goatlings beef nuts - is this a problem?, should I switch to dairy nuts? stopped getting the dairy nuts as the goats dried off but happy to go back on them.

I only feed dairy nuts to millkers, once dry they go on a very small handfull of oats and shreds. The kids get some dairy nuts, but mainly are on (expensive I know) Allan & Page goat mix, plus oats. Once wether kid is gone the girls will also move onto shreds. Goatlings get milkers ration until they are fat enough, then go onto dry milkers rations.... I know I over-complicate things... ::)
PLlus at the mo loads of carrots.

Only 1 of our 11 will eat Carrots, they all love Bananas and will go through an 18kg box every week  and they love most soft fruits, 5 of them will eat an orange every day but dairy nuts are something else  ::)

I give my boer x and AN x calf grower nuts and they never leave any.  I add a cup of oats and now some soaked sugar beet and they scoff the lot.  Have found they prefer cooked veg to raw but haven't tried with oranges or bananas.

I was told boers shouldn't be given barley as it damages the liver. Has anyone else heard this?  it is almost impossible to find a feed without barley.

Sokel,

We get ours from East Coast Viners Stonehaven direction but I am sure you can get 1st stage calf pellets / calf mix from any half descent animal feed supplier.

Cheers.

I've only tried Heygate dairy nuts but she eats them most of the time.  The others love them if she leaves any.

They all have Allen and Page coarse mix and sugar beet (I use the pellets as they take up less storage space) and carrots.

I could do with an answer to this, when I bought my boer kids I was told they fed carrots, beef nuts and rolled barley - advice please?

I thought you had to be careful with barley as it can cause acidosis. Any concentrate feed can cause it if they guts too much I know but apparently barley is the worst??
This isn't just Boers though this is ALL sheep and goats (possibly cattle but i dunno about that one).
If this is incorrect i would love to be corrected

I have never heard of barley damaging the liver. We have used flaked barley for years, and obviously it is in many other foods as well.

Yes, Carl.  I've not been using them long and the yield is dropping because of the time of year so it'll be interesting to see the effect next spring.
