Title: It feels wrong
Post by: Bionic on November 19, 2012, 05:33:29 pm
I buy most of my paperbacks from the charity shop and then send them back where they came from when I have finished.
Last night the cover of the book I had just finished was eaten by the dog, so today I have been ripping the pages out to help light the fire but it just feels wrong to destroy a book.  :(
Do any of you feel the same?
Sally

Me too Sally
I used to manage a bookshop and some companies rather than us returning SOR paperback stock, they just wanted the jackets, so we would sit ripping the jackets off all these books and the actual books went into the rubbish compactor - we couldn't even recycle them as they had to be properly destroyed :( :o

Yes, I think we've been taught to respect books and learning. Which is a good thing.

But not when the books take over your house, as they were doing in mine. As well as give some to the charity shops I have thrown some out. Felt bad, but I did anyway. The lack of clutter feels good.

I was thinking about that too, I like the feel of a Book but I suppose at least with a kindle you can enlarge the print etc, its a bit like owning your music as oppose to down loading it....I was made to burn all my college and uni stuff when I finnished, that was hard!  :(

Oh Bionic...... me too!!! - especially with crappy train station paperbacks that I haven't managed to sell on Amazon.

As JK says - they take over my life otherwise. Apparently charity shops pulp most of their books anyway if they don't sell.

Since I changed specialities, I have alot of old medical books which I can't sell and are out of date now. It's unethical to send them to be used in developing countries (why should their learning be based out of date information??)

Personally - I shred mine and put the shredded paper in the wormery or on the compost heap.

At least I know they'll be tomatoes next year :-)

But I do feel bad as I was brought up to respect books and the learning contained therein.... but I would say that now almost all of my knowledge and learning about non-professional stuff comes from the internet.

I know what you mean, SQ.  I had to get rid of text books I'd loved at Uni because they were now dangerously out of date.  Oh, that hurt!   :'(

I love books, last Christmas OH wanted to get me one of those Kindle things and was surprised when I said no thanks. To me there is nothing like the feel of a book. I know just a sad person.

I love books too  :)

What I like about my iPad, when using it as a kindle, is that I can get books instantly and I can take as many as I like with me on a train journey, without my bag being ridiculously heavy.

Sometimes I buy books just because I love the look and feel of them. :)

And I adore good secondhand bookshops :)  There's a tremendous one in Carlisle - it's like a smaller local version of Foyle's with staircases everywhere and departments, all very well organised for the most part but with irresistable piles of unsorted books in a few nooks and crannies where you always hope you'll turn up a real treasure - and sometimes do :)

It's knocked my previous favourite, being the one in Dulverton in Exmoor, into a cocked hat  :D

I cuddle up with my Kindle every night. Its heaven. Even better, when I finish one book, I just order another without having to leave my bed, then start reading again!

I too have a kindle. I don't use it that much but find it great for travelling. I wouldn't want to use it for cookery/craft or reference books though.  I like to page through those so that the pictures tempt me.
At least I then know what I am making should look like, even if it doesn't resemble it  ;D

It's like letters to Santa Bionic, you burn your letter in the woodburning stove and the words fly up in the smoke to Santa (or perhaps other recipients out there somewhere) so don't feel so bad.

My mum said that when she died she'd like to go to a library room in heaven and just read into eternity and beyond.  Hope she did  if you're out there mum!  Hope you're enjoying your book!

I grew up in a bookshop - I hate having to get rid of any... But I have quite a few books that are simply worthless, even charity shops won't take ancient, grotty, German books with pages missing! :D So I did stick a few in the recycling bin.

We've just moved into our newly built ouse and the first thing that went in were the bookcases. OH put all the books higgledy piggledy - in no particular order and I have spent a few leisurely moments trying to sort them into themes which has been so lovely. Pulling out a book brings back memories of when I bought it and why. I find that alot of my non-fiction books reflect where I wanted to get to when I bought them so it's interesting to see what I achieved and what I left behind reflected in the books.

A library of memories.

And the smell....... I always sniff my books.

But for day to day  I have my Kindle app in iPad now....

I never realised my husband had so many books on trains!! ::)

Don't have a kindle or ipad, enjoy smelling books though and feeling the thinness of the pages.

you dont 'invest' in a kindle, its nearly worthless as soon as youve used it. however a good 1st ed can appreciate noticably, as i found when i checked out my signed 1st ed 'station island' by seamus heaney that i bought in passing in dublin in 1994, my £5 then, now has a few 00 behind it!!

I have a mountain of books I need to do something with since I stopped work. They have been sitting in my hallway in precarious towers for the last 1.5 years as I find it so hard to chuck them. I think I may take the covers off and then turn them into raised beds in the garden. I just need to get OH to pee on them regularly  ;D

I've tried a Kindle.  It just isn't the same as reading a book.  I love my books and find it difficult to part with any.  Going to have to though as the bookshelves are all full and I have books in piles, waiting for a space.
