hi everyone,
we went for a drive into Wales yesterday and visited Llyn Clywedog Reservoir. Saw lots of gorgeous white sheep, not too big, some had horns and some didnt, can anyone tell me what breed they are please :fc:
-
it looks like a shetland to me. its just getting its powder poof cheeks.
-
The far one could be a Shetland easily , but a poor one with a bare face and loose fleece. It should have real side burns and a tight roo to be a good one . Not to be kept as a ram but meat I should hope. It was a.fact that the Welsh bought a LOT of Shetlands at the sales for as little as £16.00 earlier in the month so could easily be one of those.
-
well thats a surprise - i have some shetlands myself but didnt think it was like mine ,the fleece looked different and maybe because i have not seen a white one and only have girls at the moment, feeling bad now i didnt recognise them :-[

South Wales Mountain? Welsh Mountain? Or a cross of those?
-
Shetland x conmmercial ram... I have some that look nearly identical.... Shetland crossed to a Charollais' (mine are)... these look slightly less arrow-headed in the face so doubt a Charollais x...more a lleyn!
-
I wondered about a Welsh Mountain, or a cross, she's not quite like my Shetlands, even the ones wihtout the woolliest sideburns. Certainly she's small compared with that Suffolk tup!
-
Very few welsh mountain ewes have horns like that.
-
Brecknock hill cheviot pure or crossed wether / ram lamb, not a female looking head ????
-
Sunnybank - you'll have to go back and ask them 8)
-
Tell me which farm it was on and I'll ask my neighbour what the farmer keeps. Probably a cousin or school mate or something.
If you come back drop in for a cuppa you must have passed close by to get there!
-
unlikely to be Shetland because a) females on the mainland very rarely have horns and b) it's got a very long tail. Could be across of any of the dozen possibilties already discussed above...
-
Aha, a long tail. Well spotted Anke

I thought that....when I had some pedigree shetlands none of the ewes were horned! I reckon its a xbreed
-
I thought that even in Shetland crosses, the tail remained short?

Yep, at least the crosses I have done have a fairly short tail, but not fluke shaped anymore.
-
well spotted that tail is defiantly not shetland. however there are horned ewes up here we have some. but those horns are not shetland ewes horns.
a couple of ours have hornssee below

Dogwalker, not sure which farm it was other than we were just over half way on the scenic drive, quite a lot of sheep around tho ;D
Fleecewife i tried talking to the sheep but they only said Baaa with a welsh accent :D
-

Just a few about and it's definately not pronounced 'baa' :D

Its a bit wooly, but it looks a hell of a lot like some of my Wilts Horn x Lleyn ram lambs.
-
looks like its been tupped so lets hope its a ewe
-
You still get the odd ewe horned like that but its mostly the rams. Ill try and take a pic tomorrow
-
Some of my Shetland crosses have short Shetland tails, some long. Some horned, some naturally polled!
The face looks pretty Texel-ish!
-
Looks very similar to some of our smaller Texel x Hebridean lambs. I would imagine its a texel or lleyn sire with a welsh ewe
-
My first thought was Whitefaced Woodland?
