Title: Northern Ireland smallholder - cattle query
Post by: A Jackson on October 11, 2012, 12:48:32 pm
Good afternoon all,
I am new to this site, and am finding my way in the world of small holding. We have 14 acres and I currently keep hens for eggs, and fatten two saddleback pigs every year for the freezer. I am keen to move into cattle, however I fear that that the local dept. of ag. are not very pro. the small holder as they require any herd number applicant to have a lot of expensive cattle-specific handling facilities. Are there any Ulster members who have gone down this route?

When we had our visit from the Dept of Ag vet re keeping pigs she was both very supportive and helpful. So maybe you should look on them as a source of advice and not see them as a difficulty. :pig:
