I need some small bales of straw - does anyone know of a local supplier?
-
Collessie feeds sell small bales. Not sure if that's local enough for you though?
-
Sorted - thanks.
I knew Collessie would be my fallback but managed to get someone to deliver to the market

Rosemary,
I was up your way at the weekend and i have never seen so many big bales of straw lying in the fields - do they manage to sell or use it all? Surely it must be cheap to buy up there - whats the going rates?
-
I paid £12 a bale last year; don't know how much it will be this year yet. I don't use much straw but will this year as I'm going to house the cattle for a few months to give the grass a rest.

tobytoby i can see your thinking but you are way of the mark silage is down harvest yields are down one farmer i have spoken to has baled 2700 bales of straw and has more to bale straw is fed along with molasses or pot ale just to keep them going till next year
it has been know for farmers to keep there straw expecting a massive price rise only to be left with it in the spring
but to answer your question no it is not cheaper up there maybe in the field then you have costs to load and transport :farmer:

Feel like we've been paying too much.
We get 12 bales delivered every three weeks and throughout the year it varies between £16-20 :(
-
Rosemary,
What size are the bales you bought, i am sure i got quoted £30 in Ayrshire? I would hate to think that my alleged friend is trying to pump me!!

We pay between £15-£18 for a big round bale delivered to the door as we need at off a local farmer, we ring and the tractor comes up the drive within a couple of hours ::)

We pay £12- £15 for big bales in Central Scotland- Falkirk area. We do collect though- might be more if delivered.

We paid £1.50 a small bale for our hay this year - the best we have ever seen and £2.25 for a small bale of straw, though we are being limited to 100 bales as the farmer we buy from has had such problems bringing it in this year.
I'd be interested to hear what others are paying for small bales in other parts of the country.
We are in the Forest of Dean.

Crikey £1.50 would only pay for the costs associated with growing and harvesting and bringing in the bale.....
