Title: What to do with antler pieces
Post by: Alistair on September 09, 2012, 10:02:25 am
Its my wife's birthday soon, we have rule, you can't buy anything, you have to make it.

I've been searching around and I've got,

Some very nice Icelandic hand spun wool I was given
Some antler chews I can rob off the dogs,
An old swatch watch
Some nice beech sticks
An old leather belt (very thick leather)
Loads of jewellery fasteners, wire etc

I was thinking of trying to make an antler watch with a knitted strap, ie cut the antler into disc and bastardise the swatch, knit the strap on 2mm needles in a cable pattern, the wool is fine for this, and leave it unblocked so it's still stretchy

Probably it'll end up being one of my experimental projects that doesn't really work but loads of fun to do, I can see a multitude of problems

Based on antler and knitting has any one else got any ideas, i did think about doing an antler 'ring' and then knitting an iCord necklace to go through it, or something like antler glued to leather to antler to wood  etc and sanded like a knife handle, and shaped as a pendant?

Any other ideas?

Sounds very innovative - I'm not an ideas person at all  ::) but please put up photos when you've completed it. :excited:

Depends what you're like with carving and what your wife likes etc.

For example, if she has long hair, you could make very good hair slide with beech and antler, or a shawl pin can be similar. Do you have time to knit a scarf and make a scarf pin?

Obviously you could make a sheep/walking stick, with an antler head of some description.

Cut a leather thong from the belt and then make beech and antler beads for a necklace? (I'm favouring this one myself  :))

I'm thinking Raquel Welch' 10,0000 years BC
Either that or a whistle from the antler

You could do another hair clasp with a piece of the leather, punch a hole either end of it and use a bit of your beech or a pin made from antler to slide through the 2 holes. Very good for holding a half ponytail type style

Obviously you can pretty it up lots and make it more special
