Title: Grass topper
Post by: jaynetolan on July 26, 2012, 01:53:27 pm
Hi, New here so Hello!
I have a small paddock in need of the grass cutting, in parts it is has high as my shoulders. We have just bought 3 hebradian sheep, but the grass needs cutting asap.
Does anyone know of anywhere, or has anyone got a grass topper of any description to loan/rent to me for the weekend any time soon. I don't have any equipment due to my field only being small and probably not needing to use things often. Thanks

We have a local grasslands project (Forest of Dean) who can help with this sort of thing, and maybe there is a similar group near you?

Maybe ask around other smallholders in your area to see who helps out.

Or try a local feed supplier to ask questions if you don't know who else to ask?

If it's very long topping it will make a right mess of it. You will have rows of cut grass covering the ground and killing the grass off under it.

Just leave the sheep in, but watch for scauld between the clees.

Sounds like you would be best getting someone in with a grass flail...rather than a topper. It will chop it up small into a mulch so the goodness goes back in and doesn't kill off the grass it covers :o)
