Title: Cleaning ovens - I wasn't sure where to post this
Post by: Bionic on May 22, 2012, 02:25:32 pm
The oven isn't that dirty but every time I put it on you can smell where hot fat from a roast has slattered previously.
I have cleaned it but the smell won't go away. Does anyone have a tip for getting rid of the smell?

thanks
Sally

I have an idea for getting rid of the smell of fat. Bung 4lb of mackerel in there for half an hour! You'll have forgotten all about it!  ;D

Another method that I learnt from a housemate when I was a student - laundry washing powder, especially the super-stain-removing stuff. Use it like bicarb, but allow it to sit/soak for a while (if you can pull apart the oven and soak in a laundry sink, leave it over night - good for crusty baking trays). It works!

Obviously a little more difficult if it's on the sides/top of the oven, but just scrub it with a laundry powder/warm water mix.

Does the smell affect other food you cook in it?

When the smoke alarm goes off every time I open my oven door I steam clean it, then wipe it round with cider vinegar. That seems to work. :)

Good tip Alice,
No, luckily the smell doesn't affect other foods that I cook.  I think the main problem is on the roof of the ven which is a bit more difficult to deal with.  I left a bicarb paste on it overnight and will wash it off this morning.

thanks

Of course you could always give up cooking and get OH to take you out to eat every day.

Go on line to something like eSpares and buy a trigger pack of professional oven cleaner for about £7 inc P&P strip the oven out and use it on everythign that is oven cleaner safe. carefully using cloves leave it for several hours and hot soapy water was hit off , your oven will be like new .
From then on use a cassserole /lidded pot for roasting or  roasting bags .

If you heat PIZZA in the oven slip a sheet of baking parchment under the slab  so it does not burn onto the shelf wires.
If you open pan roast a veg medly slip that parchment on or use a roasting bag.

once you have cooked int eh oven slip a dish of hot water in it and leave it to cool down a bit then wipe out your oven with a slightly damp soapy cloth and anothe wipoe with it rinsed out.

The secret of keeping your oven clean is to clean it everytime you use it , prevent splashed of fat or food and never cook in a dirty oven as it bakes things on.

That professional cleaner from  e Spares I spoke of is really the dogs . I've never found anything better .
The label shows :-

" Professional oven care      500 ml  "
approved by Indisit , Hotpoint and Scholties ...

 NOTE WELL
You must wear decent rubber gloves when using it and wash offf any splashes or smears as it stings like mad on bare skin
