Title: Flubenvet
Post by: melholly on May 09, 2012, 08:07:54 am
Hi all,

Wonder if somebody can decode how to use this! Sad thing is, I did my ducks with it last year but look at the instructions and it's like a foreign language again!!

I've 5 Indian Runners, fed on pellets & mixed corn. Can anyone share with me how they've administered Flubenvet pretty please!!

Thanks all,

Mx

For our chooks I make a mash. I mix the flubenvet powder well into the dry mash and add water, stir it around to crumbly and then just trust to luck that the chickens well all eat roughly an equal share.

The person who invents a single dose wormer for chickens and ducks should get the Nobel Prize for common sense in my view.......

If feeding pellets, add a little olive oil to the measured amount of pellets and mix well. This should encourage the flubenvet, when added, to stick to the pellets. Sprinkle in throughout mixture and give good stir.

I use Marriages Layers pellets with added Flubenvet when it is time for worming. So much easier and I dont think expensive unless maybe you have hundreds of chickens. Always think worming hens is a bit of a lottery .... did the powder mix in evenly? ..... have they eaten enough? .... etc. At least with the pre-prepared pellets one aspect is taken care of. You can order the Marriages if not available locally.

Not sure where you are?

I agree with the above and all the queries about measuring - why on earth the drug companies can't make something more user friendly is beyond me - you think you breathe half of it in when you're mixing it  ::) best to use Marriages but if not then its a scoop to a 25kg bag of feed (if I remember correctly) - I'm due to worm them all in June although I do worm new ducklings and their mums at around 3-4 weeks old by putting a tinsy bit in their breadcrumbs mixed with milk which they yummy up. ;)

We have been doing the same as 'In the hills' for the last 18 months. Premix (10Kg bags) is best and if we run short I mix powder with Olive Oil and mix to feed. There should be no free ranging to be sure that they get the full dose. Problem is our hens hate that and one became very stressed as a result of being in the run for 7 days. She became ill and didn't recover.

We are trying an alternative. A scoop of Flubenvet is enough for 2Kg of feed or two large fowl for 7 days. We will add the scoop to olive oil to make a thin paste and give each a shot every morning when let out instead. Have already tried this with a sick cockerel (using cod liver oil with multivitamins instead) and it worked extremely well. He was badly wormed and showed great improvement within a day -still got the 7 days though. Within 3 days his poos were completely normal.

Marriages do layers pellets with flubenvet already added. Doesnt work out any more expensive because you would be feeding them anyway. At  least that way you know they got their share.

Yep, I buy the Marriages stuff - feed for 7-10 days, job done. Just watch the use by dates though.

If I use Flubenvet mixed in with the corn feed most of the thieving wild birds around here must be getting wormed at the same time.... ::) ::)

I wonder why it has to be done over 7 days, most animals get one dose and that's that.  If using a 'drop' on then it's only the once. How do you know they have had the right dose?

Chris - is there a reason why the oil/Flubenvet mix can't be given in one dose.

I don't use pellets as the birds were eating those even faster and I prefer my hens to have a more natural feed.  I have homemade pheasant feeders and the henny's peck at those for their feeds - it has cut down the amount the birds get - though some have learnt how to peck it out of the feeders. >:( >:(

The Marriages with Flubenvet is available in 10 and 20 kg bags.

SuzieQueue - nearest supplier I can find is Farm and Pet Place ...... Oswestry/Wrexham way. I had a word with the lady in charge of the Animal Health section at Charlies, Welshpool at the weekend. She hadnt heard of it but was very interested and was going to contact the manufacturers. If you can collect it from somewhere locally it is good value ... I ordered the first time I used it but paid quite a lot for delivery.

Yes - I've been looking at the delivery charges and thought that I would call Marriages today and see if their prices beat SPR poultry's. Then remembered that I've still got this big tub of Flubenvet to get through. I might have a word with Wynnstay here in Llanidloes and see if they would consider stocking it...... and call Charlie's at Welshpool as well and ask - just so they've got a couple of enquiries for the same thing...... See if that jogs them

Marriages deliver a 1 tonne pallet free. I buy sheep, pig and poultry feed from them so it's not too hard to make up 50 bags. Maybe you could share with someone local.

I found it a nightmare and won't bother with mixing it any longer since ready mixed medicated pellets have been on the market... :&>

Mmmm - there wold be an economy of scale there too I expect. We have started to gather a bit of usage data this year so we should be able to get an idea of how much of what we might need.

Thanks Rosemary

I'm another one who didn't know Marriages produced layers pellets with added Flubenvet.  I know what I'll be using next time worming is due.  Thanks for the info.
Does anyone out there buy it locally in Aberdeenshire or is it another online purchase I have to make?

I was advised by a vet that the only company with a licence to sell it mail order was SPR. This was at the National Poultry Show last year, but he then went on to say that the rules were being relaxed soon to make it easier to get licenced. Its cheap enough and they have changed their packaging and their courier -we had 3 broken bags of 5 last year and one was empty, just the packet with a few pellets left. The delivery man apologised and went on to say that if I saw the way they threw stuff around at the depot I'd be amazed that anything survived! I reported that to SPR obviously.

I ordered it from here
http://www.farmandpetplace.co.uk/ (http://www.farmandpetplace.co.uk/)
I found their price the best when I looked. what happens is that when you've placed the order a pharmacist is going to give you a ring before they send it off. I found the company very helpful with lots of questions, customer service is top. I had a broken bag of pellets from them, too and got another for free.:&>

Heygates also make a premixed flubenvet feed

Personally I use the powder as although the feeds are convenient unless you already feed Marriages/Heygates you are changing the bird's diet at a time that isn't ideal (ie when medicating)

I find changing our hens feed actually encourages them to eat it. They guzzle it down at worming time. I guess they get bored with the same old stuff every day. They certainly don't like their pellets coated with Flubenvet powder but are a bit more enthusiastic if I mix the powder with olive oil first to a paste and them mix it on/ in. Makes it easier to do as well in my experience.

I have sometimes thought that it may not be a good idea to change their diet suddenly from one brand of layers to the Marriages-medicated but cant see any ill effects and as chrismahon says they do seem to enjoy the Marriages and eat it more readily than their normal brand. Marriages also do layers pellets designed specifically for quail and these went down well with our quail. Just too much of a drive for me to use Marriages all the time and cant store a big delivery.

Yes marriages Quail pellets are excellent, my Quail laid like lunatics on marriages. Bigger eggs too.

take care with introducing any layers pellets to birds that used to have a different diet - my ducks did not take very well to pellets in the beginning, I had half of them turning egg bound when I introduced them ad lib. Once I reduced the pellets to a specified amount all returned to normal - but with more eggs than on the just grain diet  :&>
