Our first Jersey Giant has hatched - it's sooo cute !!
Should we leave her in the incubator for 24hrs, & give the others a chance to hatch, or pop her under the heat lamp?
There are 2 others pipping.
Also, can you auto sex them, or do we have to wait until they start crowing !!!
Thanks
Carol

Leave it in the incubator while some others hatch. It's cheeping will encourage the others and it's better to move a few at a time under the heat lamp rather than just one.

Thank you, I've just peeked and one is half out already !
-
How exciting ;D
-
Just been to check and there are 4 chicks all fully hatched out !!!!
it really is sooo exciting !!!
-
you can move a few now!!!

Congratulations ! Any chance of a picture carol ?

I just googled Jersey Giants Because I didn't have a clue what you were all on about ??? ( I'm such a newbie to poultry ::) ) They are fantastic birds  Well done you :chook: . Now my list of I WANT has just grown some more ;D

Sorry I can't attach a photo it keeps throwing up an error !!
I didn't explain where the eggs came from, we bought 12Jersey Giant eggs from ebay, We'd also put a few eggs from our own chooks in the incubator.
.
Sadly another 2 of the Jersey Giant eggs which had started pipping when we left for work this morning had died before they hatched out. I blame myself - I should have taken the day off work.
And just 10 mins ago another one from our chooks has hatched out it looks very tired -bless.

No, don't blame yourself, the view to take is if conditions are right (and clearly they are cos the rest have hatched properly) then there was something wrong with these late, didn't-hatch-on their-own chicks. So probably better as it is :-*

did you open the incubator to have a peek or can you see in from the lid

CarolW how are your Jersey Giant chicks doing?
You have got me completely fascinated about this breed. So now you are the resident expert on them, as you have been the proud owner for 5/6 whole days . can you tell me at what age can you sex them? How much do they eat, is it twice as much as they are twice as big as most chickens? and finally (so far ;D ) how much space do they need in there coop? Sorry for all the questions but I really want to know as much as possible before I take the plunge into the deep dark depths of eBay ;D I have done quite a lot of research on the interweb, but can't find the answers to these 3 questions, so hopefully you or somebody will be able to help. :chook: :chook: :chook:

Hi - The Jersey Giants are doing well so far, they aren't eating any more food than the other chicks - and, they are all pretty much the same size, if anything the Giants are a little smaller than the others.
We are going to keep them with our other chooks when they are old enough. They have a very large run and when we aren't at work we let them all roam the garden (1acre altogether)
I don't think you can auto sex them so I think we'll have to wait until they show the signs !!
Not much help -sorry!

Thanks, Glad they are all doing well

They are lovely looking birds. Apparently not good with small children from the little I read. A shame as I have 3 kids under 6 and would love some of these.
