Post by: Nell on April 18, 2012, 08:45:09 am
Hey all, I'm a smallholder from near Dumfries - so far have a flock of Texel sheep and 11 hens of various sorts.

Welcome from just over the border in north Cumbria   Commercial sheep (mainly Texel with a bit of Charollais) and beef (mainly native breeds); rare breed pigs (OSB sow and x Saddleback offspring), sheep (Castlemilk Moorits), ponies (Fells and Dales) and a growing little herd of Jersey house cows. :)

Oh lovely! We used to keep Galloway and WSH cattle as well when we were in the beef market but unfortunately we had to let them go when we sold our big farm -OH has always been a commercial farmer, but we decided to downsize to the smallholding. Taking a lot of work as the steading is practically derelict and although the ground is fantastic, it's essentially riverbank silt and very soft, so would get chewed up by heavy hooves. Think OH would love a horse or two, but I think we'd have the same problem with their hooves, and I'm not really a horsey person  :)
