Title: Ebay eggs
Post by: Brijjy on April 17, 2012, 09:48:55 pm
I bought 6 gold spangled appenzeller eggs and 6 lavender araucana eggs from ebay. Over the weekend all 6 appenzellers hatched and 3 of the araucanas. I am very pleased with this result, the little guys are very bonny.
I have bought eggs from ebay before and had good results.

Yes I buy eggs of eBay, its pot luck most of the times, depends on how roughly they are handled in transit.

I recently purchased four Chinese geese eggs, when they arrived one was smashed, the seller did send me four more but yet another was smashed,to be honest the packing was not what I would use to send eggs through the post,I have them under hens but they have obviously been shaken up.we shall await the
results!

Well done Brijjy, they look gorgeous and a really good hatch rate for postal eggs ;D

I usually get good eggs off ebay, unless you get a package come with an 'Xrayed' sticker on it then you may as well just throw it away :censored:! I have some hatching as I type but not pedigrees , some meat bird crosses.
I saw once on telly an inspection of parcels with a sniffer dog, the dog was just trampling and kicking about egg poly boxes with fragile written all over them , scambed egg I thought. ::)

I had good results with silkies 6 out of six. 3 RIR cockerels & 1 hen from Doz, & 1 white hen out of six  which should have been a RIR.

The silkie breeder advised to leave the eggs for 24hrs with the points down to calm them down after transit and it seemed to work.

My rule of thumb is if 50% of the eggs by post hatch then they've done ok. This week I had 10 out of 18 hatch.

In my experience the signed for overnight delivery eggs have the highest hatch rate (up to 90%).

Always leave posted eggs to 'settle' for 24 hours before putting in the incubator.

ooooh gold spangled appenzellers were our 1st chooks nearly 10 years ago (we still have one of the original girls too)

they are so funky with their spots and hairdo's!

you won't need to wait too long to find out which are males/females either. They are the earliest to crow (at 7 weeks old) of any of the breeds I've ever had.
