Title: Hi, young farming enthusiast
Post by: FloraGunn on April 14, 2012, 07:24:36 pm
Hello, i am Flora and i am 14
I absolutely love farm animals and i had pigs with my next door neighbour last year which was the best experience! Today we went to look at piglets and have now secured 6 more for this year! i am so excited! i also really want chickens but my mum is against the idea. My next door neighbour also has sheep and i love the new lambs. I wish i could live on a farm and have pigs, sheep, cows, goats and chickens and lots of dogs! would be the dream!

Flora, you sound like you have a lot of enthusiasm and love, you WILL do what you want one day, just need to do things that help you get what you want,  maybe a college course in some farming related subject would be great when you are old enough, till then you need your English and Maths. Animals are so rewarding to work with....I just have dogs and chickens and am not fit enough to even wish for anything else, my middle daughter had your interest and we always said she would have a farm, she hasn't so far but who knows, she also had pigs and has had chickens and ducks.....Study all you can about the different animals and birds and this forum will provide you with lots of real experiences shared!!!!

Hi Flora,
Good advice from Sandy and you're learning loads with your neighbour.

I started with four Black Rock hens in a garden. Now, finally I have a small farm and a full-time job  :D

You will do it, if you want it enough, one day

Hi and welcome  Sounds like you have made a good start, and if you really want something work towards it and everything will fall into place.     And as Sandy says get some qualifications along the way and use your interest in farming and animals to enhance your schoolwork  :)

Good for you - good to see young folk interested in farming and food production. There's no better or more important  job than producing food

Hi Flora,
We went to see a litter of 13 piglets yesterday too.  I have decided to have 2. We pick ours up on 5th May.  When do you get yours?

This is completely a new experience to me so, by having had some last year with your neighbour, you are already way ahead of me.

I hope you will enjoy them.

Sally

, I just wanted to suggest "cosmic ordering" it's not mumbo jumbo just helps order things and then they come to you!!  If I want anything in life, I write down what I want, then work backwords how to get to the thing I want, if its an item such as furniture, I look at adds in  places and join groups where things are given away or sold, if its a job, I try to do as much as possible in my life that puts me in contact with other people who do that job, volunteering, paid work, visiting etc and of course finding out as much as I can on the comp... An example was as a teenager I wanted a horse so when I met a young man with a farm I thought BINGO..never got the horse as I went off the idea (and the boy) but you could join stuff like young farmers, go to shows (can be expensive) or learn a country skill,  or a qualification that suits your personality, if you are a maths bod, you can always do accounting, we all find that handy.  If you write a list, a route to how you can get to work with animals comes to you!!!! Hope that makes sense as its early for me and only had half my coffee!!!   By the way, I have so far got every thing I wanted in life, not much money and bad mobility but the rest is great!!

  Hi Flora.  You sound a very determined young lady and I'm sure you will get what you want, even if you have to wait a while.  I agree with what others have said about getting your education and thinking about agricultural college.  Hope you get your hens.   :chook:

Hi there,

Hope it all goes well for you. I grew up in the country too and unlike my peers, I didn't want to leave and get myself off to London as soon as I possibly could....

Remember - you can always rent a few acres and see how you get on. People often seem to overlook renting, but if you dont have a lot of cash, its the way forward. Maybe you know some people with paddocks that need them grazing? That way you could get em rent free if you throw em a lamb each year....
