Title: an udder question?
Post by: nihicib2 on April 12, 2012, 10:59:05 am
I have an udder question about goats (see what I did there  ;D)
my AN is in her final week of pregnancy and her udders are huge, they are really long, almost touching the ground and she is finding it awkward to walk without banging against them, in her past pregnancies they were average size, nothing like this, Im just wondering is it something I should be concerned with, she was scanned with twins if that makes any difference

Hi Brid,

May mean it is more than twins....Nubs do tend to think in triplets + !!!!!!

Possibly better to restrict exercise until kidding..... or make an udder bag from an old pilowcase to protect her.

Other than that there is very little you can do...obviously make sure mastitis isn't brewing but I doubt it.... more like a multi kidding.    Personally, unless there is a medical reason to do so, I don't scan....... simply because it is unreliable in goats particularly Nubians.   It is perfectly possible for a kid to 'hide' behind another.

Just to complete the picture...many years ago when I did scan....... 1 particular goat was scanned as twins, poss triplets but absolutely no more than that !!!!!   She gave birth to 6 !!!!!!      All survived quite happily.

Ok I made a mistake :'(  as I was typing my original question I was looking out on the yard at my AN's playing and typed in AN, Heidi (the pregnant one) is a BA, note to self must concentrate more when typing  ;)

Even thought the weather here is lovely these past few days Im going to keep her in with Fionnuala her best buddy Im just too afraid of her catching the udder on something outside and doing some serious damage, I only hope that when she has the kids that the udders will get a little smaller.
