Lazy
Network Rail men here for last few days doing fencing so gate wide open, dogs on lead to run in front paddock instead of full walk as I have a chest infection. Tried taking them to woods on Wednesday with a friend but came back shattered, so not trying again till I can breathe properly. Won't do them any harm for a day or so. So missing a show tomorrow too, hope I'm better for the grandchildren on Sunday's sleepover. :(

OMG
And yesterday!!!
My own fault yesterday mind you :-[ :-[. Let the hens out into the front paddock. Forgot they were out :-[, also forgot Allez had bashed open the gate a few weeks ago - wood is soft that the loop is screwed into and he goes at it with such force it just pulls the screws out :-[. Let Allez and Belle into front gravel garden and went off inside for a cuppa.
Suddenly realised they hadn't let themselves back in as usual and in the same millisecond the thought came to me that he had bashed the gate again. Rushed out and found Belle on point to a group of 4 hens, them pecking around as if to say 'If we don't move too fast and don't look at her we'll be fine' It worked and I was able to call her off and putt her in the house. No sign of Allez so I called him and heard a muffled bark. There he was in the run surrounded by another 4 hens, and an egg balanced precariously in his jaws. (Where's the whistling nonchalantly icon? ;D)
Grabbed the egg, collared him, put him in the house too. That left three hens unaccounted for and a huge pile of tail feathers on the grass. (Belle plucks them if she gets close enough ::)) Looked across to the horizontal hit and miss fence onto the drive and saw some feathers sticking out. Thought they must have killed one, but no, she was just so firmly stuck with one wing and one leg outspread that she couldn't move. Folded both and just pushed - she had to come out dead or alive! Fortunately there was an indignant squawk as she plopped out the other side, I ran through the front gate and grabbed her as she was shaking herself down. Two left to find, one of them Hoppy, who can't go far as she's got a sore foot at the mo (being treated) - found her hiding in the bushes at the top of the bank onto the lane and then the forestry guys arrived back to do some more tree felling. Had them hunting up and down the drive then my friend next door yelled out 'she's here and she's heading for the road'. One of the guys ran up the drive to head her off and the other ducked under the tree branches and deftly picked her up one handed, folded her wings and handed her back to Mummy. Alls well etc.
Today is another story - but I need a cup of tea to recover so you'll just have to wait! ;)

Yesterday was an OMG day too. I seem to have had a few of those lately!
It all started well - Network Rail contractors appeared on time - then all hell broke loose. The dogs went bananas as they heard the rumble of the hole digging equipment coming into the garden. I hadn't managed to get up in time to get the kennel dogs out for a run before they arrived and started removing the palisade, so I had to go in and get leads on them to take them into the front paddock.
That would have been OK except the tree surgeons had arrived as well and left the gate to the field open too, so I struggled over half an acre with two desperate Brittanys to shut it, scowling at them as I went. I didn't want to say too much as they are being kind enough to chop the trees small enough to go into the wood burner in a couple of years time. Anyway, let the oldest and youngest off for their gallop, and suddenly realised the nice men had started up their chainsaws. So I had to cut short Bobby and Freckles' pigeon hunt, get them back on leads to take them back to the yard. They weren't keen on the idea till I called out 'Breakfast' - and fortunately they came back - along with three burly tree surgeons! ::) I had offered them a cup of tea earlier. Ok, got them all dealt with so now back to the house to get Allez and Belle out for their morning stroll. Hmm, not what they had in mind either. Belle decided to shout at all the men, ran right up to each one and barked right at them, wagging her tail as if trying to get the chainsaws to play! ::) In the meantime, Allez had disappeared so put Belle back in the house and whistled for him. No sign so I looked under the culvert bridge and there he was at the other side of the wooden curtain, happily hunting along the bank. Now this bridge carries the train line over the burn and is about three feet high, so to go under it you have to bend double, and if a train goes over it you would be deafened so I don't do it very often ::) Anyway, the Brat refused to acknowledge all whistle, voice and hand signals, and in that situation you just have to go after them and bring them back, so I toddled back in for my wellies, struggled down the bank, prised the rubble away from the wood curtain, and edged it back enough to get past, bent double and prayed there wasn't a train coming as I went through the 40 feet or so to the other side. At which point I realised the burn was deeper than my wellies :-[ and cursed my dog. He heard me, stood stock still - and l a u g h e d - I SWEAR, he laughed! >:( >:( So ... change of tactics required ............. 'Hey, chook chook, what you doing through here, nice chook chook come to Mummy, sez I as I bent over pretending to stroke a chicken - he came a runnin! YAY, gotcha my boy. :P Lead on, bent over to go through the tunnel again, thank goodness still no train, struggled through the wooden barrier, made him sit in the water, (where's the vengeance icon Dan?) pulled a couple of boulders over and wedged the curtain in place, waded along to the garden, climbed out - to three howling-with-laughter foresters. I will NOT repeat what I said to them and Allez at that point but went in for a hot shower, dry clothes, a cup of tea and a lie down ina darkened room- it was too early for vodka ::) ;D

The file of anecdotes for my book is growing by the minute. ;D

Hopefull
After a few days above freezing I am going to turn the water stopcock on in the barn - and hope that the pipes that run through it and into the house then outto our "boiler room" the other side of the house have not burst. All alone - so lots of running to check for leaks along its long route.

The ponies have broken into the veg plot, trashed the fruit cages, the electric fence won't work and can't see why, computer won't accept any of my passwords, security questions etc. when I finally persuade myself to try and do daughters student finance stuff for next years Uni, and now I only have an hour left before i've got to be back at work for the evening shift. Never mind tomorrow is the weekend, let's hope the sun shines a little and we get the new post and rail fencing up round the veggie plot.

That worried was justified as I saw there was a man on the run from prison that night!! maybe it was not him but I was all alone and to see a man in a hooded top at your door is not my idea of a good customer!!

Mandy :pig:
-
Smelly :chook:
Been cleaning out the hens and dropped a bucket of water mixed with chicken poo and its splashed all over me!!
-
offbalance
Had to go against the grain and pay a visit to the quack yesterday - cold has left me with labyrinthitis so I fall over unless I walk really slowly and don't turn quickly. Have also gone deaf in right ear. Tablets are helping though, and with all the railway fencing machinery outside being slightly deaf has it's advantages. Worst thing is not being allowed to drive any further than the mile or so up into the town or along to the supermarket.
-
Hot !
Shade temp is 22 and the 2 thermometers in the sun show 39 and 41. Think I'll leave the plant transplanting out till the sun goes down.

Was diagnosed Monday with labyrinthitis and had bad attack at lunchtime, lay down on recliner and couldn't move my head till just ha;f an hour ago. still a bit shaky but had to feed dogs and birds. Maybe have a cup of tea now i I feel a little better.
-
I know your family will be concerned that you do not go out etc so maybe some one could come over to check you are OK or maybe you keep them informed, I would hate you to be too scared to move, it certainly must have been frightening...Bed and a hot drink & some nice food will keep you going for now, hope it improves very soon!! Maybe the dog walker could pop in!! Mine have not been out as I am not too wonderful but nothing like you have, just my usual body playing up stuff""

Bread
think we have just found the magic G/F loaf recipe!
Share please ;D
the flour we use is doves farm G/F bread flour. but the recipe and method are now very different and are a trade secret i'm afraid. what i will say is to leave the dough/batter in the fridge overnight to prove rather than 50 mins in a warm place. the flavour seems greatly improved and taste more like gluten bread. must remember to bring the dough back to room temp before you start the second prove.

Useful
OH away all day so I managed to get on with some things ;D ;D ;D
Sorted out and repotted all the seedlings, planted out the cucumbers and put up some matrix boxes in the polytunnel for all my bits and pieces. Changed the bed, fed and watered everyone. Weeded round the apple trees at our local community orchard. Purchased a few things we needed for chickens etc. Went for a run. Sorted out the sheep book. Gave my part of the workshop and jolly good tidy up and put away all the things we had used to make the chick pens yesterday. Watched a film and listened to Alan Hawkshaw very loud on iTunes :D :D :D.
Now waiting for OH to come back.

-
Fantastic Absolutely FANTASTIC.
Several weeks of planning and getting set up with micro irrigation on variable timers in the square foot ,,,,veg beds , flower beds , hanging baskets and glasshouse .
Now I can spend time doing something else instead of being a wandering Jew with a watering can for several hours a day .
It has barely rained here for nearly three weeks and the gardens were starting to show it .
It has also made a big difference in the glashouse for the fine spray heads have boosted the humidity and stabilized the temps at 80 oF ..
Seeds are now germinating like wild fire .
The heated misting propagation bed is really starting to come into its own ..I've recently sucessfully cloned forty odd bright red geraniums that were carefully started off as 14 seeds in early March inside the bungalow. Once the clones were found to be taking root they were potted on and grown in the glass house .
The last two auto watering days have seen a massive sustained growth that has enable me to plant them out in to the flower beds today .
-
Quiet

Fortunately, we found them all - and the joy of finding them outweighed the frustration of not being able to find them ;D

Outside weather thingy telling us temperature, humidity etc showed it was 60degrees outside our front door in the sun.
Couldnt believe it when I saw it. Its now 34.8, but the sun is on the back.

Busy.
Writing group this morning and reading group this evening. Most I've done in one day for a while.

Food :)
Have made my first ever successful batch of goats cheese so I'm feeling quite chuffed!
However the cherry plum jam is a fail. Wouldn't set so unless the pectin kicks in over the next few days I have several jars of 'sunset coulis' having used 3 different colours of plum and hoping for a pretty jar of jam!

Everything feels so damp the humidity is so high. It gives me such a headache and makes me feel ill.

Hooves.
My friend came round and trimmed the goats' hooves. They were all very good, even Pom although hers took ages as she has some foot rot.

MANIC!!!!
Why do so many people get animals when they cannot afford them, then demand them treated immediately before the other waiting-room-full of ill animals, or refuse to take a bouncing pet home 'just in case' it has diarrhoea again in the next few days!!
( Oh if only ALL pet owners were made to pay something towards treatment ??? But then which pets would be left to suffer :-\ )
-
BLOOD!
Been to donate today, wouldn't recommend then going immediately to milk 300 cows, 25 of which were new calved and stroppy in a boiling hot parlour.
Came out feeling rather worse for wear and distinctly light headed :unwell:
