Title: Grinning ridiculously
Post by: Sudanpan on January 16, 2012, 06:38:22 pm
We bought a 1996 Land Rover Defender 90 today  ;D ;D ;D

I know they are hopelessly fuel inefficient, noisy, draughty, basic  :o but that doesn't matter because it is a Landy and will enjoy the challenge of the cornish 'roads'

Just had to share

Oh you lucky thing, if I wasn't fighting a planning battle up north I'd have had one this year. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

We used to have a long wheel base one, I am sure it had a fuel leak, it guzzled the stuff. We now have a citroen Berlingo for an everyday car( goes for miles on a breath and tows well) and a fergie for the hard work.

If I had a Berlingo that I had to tow , I'd get rid of it PDQ   ;)   :bouquet:

Ah, lovely. We had one a few years ago - kind of wish we'd kept it. No, I don't  ;D Have fun.

Cool!  Ours is currently broken down resting in the garage at the moment - it's 5th holiday since we got it a year ago. I'm so hoping that this will finally be everything sorted, but deep down I know it's just the tip of the iceberg. I still love it though!  ;D

No silly, tows trailers well. ;D Shetland is Berlingo land. Most folk have them cause they are so good on fuel, as fuel up here is so expensive and it is a hour to the shops. They are really good in snow and can fit quite a lot of stuff in the back.A lot of crofters have them. The landy was a real workhorse but too expensive for us out here. :(

My 2001 110 TD5 has been brilliant, cant fault it. I love em! It isnt too bad on fuel either, considering what a lump of metal it is!

Oh, I'm jealous  :D

I loved our 110. Never mind that you had to bundle up in hats and scarves on the journey up to the Cairngorms, that it had to do 17 point turns in Aviemore Tesco car park cos it had no power steering.....

On the day when even the Police cars were sticking to the inside lane that had been cleared of snow, hubby said that he woke just as I was pulling confidently into the outside uncleared lane knowing that the 110 would get us (and the big caravan I was towing) safely through  :)

I was plotting a 90 as well as a car, so that I had something to get out of the dale in, on snowy or flooded days. But I am mechanically inept, so had to go for a reliable Nissan instead!

I'm very envious!

There's only one thing better than a defender - a  Series IIA

We just decided not to replace our two older cars with a newer one.  Can't afford it with all the economy crap happening  But the trigger for the discussion was another bill for the Nissan Terrano which we had from new and has been 9 years of trouble with awful dealers.  It's great for towing, so that's why we keep it.  Haven't dared look at the cost per mile sums.

OHs daihatsu on the other hand has been blissfully trouble free for about the same time.

They did one of those deals where Renault owns a chunk of Nissan and Nissan owns a chunk of Renault but Renault is in charge.  Not sure when it happened though but I think ours may have been built the Friday before.  I think the idea may have been to get French design flair mixed with Japanese reliability but something might have got lost in translation.

The engine and gearbox are great, but the electrics are unreliable and the suspension is fragile.  The clonk on full lock has just returned.  Anything minor costs £400, everything else is £1000 so we're ignoring it for a bit longer.

3 days in and still grinning  ;D

Robert - we think it has been refurbished. The bodywork has been resprayed at some point, and the mudguards, mudflaps interior roof lining replaced etc. The chassis seems to be in good nick - the front bumper is failing in one section so we are replacing it, and the back section has a couple of areas that will benefit from some re-welding.
The engine seems in good shape - there is 113000 on the clock and we think it is genuine given the evidence we have for the mileage done in the last couple of years.

We took the dogs to Praa Sands in it yesterday - they were very happy at the new idea of being able to see out of a window - previous travel arrangements were in the back of the transit van!
