Title: Online Shows for 2012
Post by: Dan on January 04, 2012, 11:46:53 am
Thanks to those who contributed to the Christmas online shows (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/online-shows/) and congratulations to the winners.

We're now planning what we do for 2012. We'll be having a Goat Show in January, but what do people think about how we organise the shows beyond that?

Would it be better to have a single show each month concentrating on a single species of livestock, with a big amalgamated show once a year?

What about slipping in the odd show for things like food and craft - anyone interested in showing off their cookery/baking/handicraft skills?

All ideas welcome.  :)

Dan,
As I don't yet have any livestock, other than a cat and dog I like the idea of something for crafts.

I also think that one show monthly might work better than trying to do them all at the same time.  Perhaps the monthly winner could be the entry we have for the calendar.

One suggestion from me is the best comical picture. That could be by lifestock category or across the board.  There were several posted in the pigs and poultry that would have fitted the bill e.g. the corner pig and the little piggie that won with the snow on his nose.

different craft photos/classes is an excellent idea and a real inspiration to those who havent tried it.
bring out the spinning wheels and taxidermy and butchery  ;) ;) for action shots!

I would also be pleased if we could get some sort of charity involved.  Dan already set up Justgiving on here for the competition CSSA 2012 calendar I did (only 7 left out of 50 printed - anyone else want one?) and it worked perfectly.

I'm happy to do a calendar again but I would be doing it with some of the net proceeds going to CSSA.  I also credited the person who sent the photo in - made good Christmas/New Year gifts.

We build our own chicken coops and other bits and pieces. Cost is the issue -how cheap can you build something for? Maybe that's a possible subject -stuff built entirely from reclaim or natural material. Like the recent thread on plant pots built from old plastic pipe.

Oh, can we do this PLEASE Dan - I'd be really good at it (had loads of practice)  ;) :D :D :D

I think crafts and baking are good topics, what about best landscape view ?
I think a monthly comp that runs for 3 weeks with a week for judging would give everyone plenty of time to concentrate on their 'entry' rather than 2 or more comps at a time - but maybe that's just cos I'm always so busy lol!

Having a calendar tied in with a charity or business of some sort would work (even take it up a notch to a small diary) - kinda "Smallholders Year", you could even have important dates/notes printed on it (best time to serve sows for January/July farrowing, when routine shearing & dagging of sheep should happen, 4 year crop rotation plans etc - there's loads that could be done with it  ;))

But the 'How cheap can you build.......' catagory suggestion is my current fave

Hi Dan.

Action shots of your animals or birds! :),there does not seem to be many pictures of ducks and the like!
Flora and Fauna!,or Nature and/or surroundings in your smallholdings.

All good suggestions -especially the "how cheap can you get".

I would like to see a winter or Autumn  " Store room" photo category. Not only does this share the fruits of members hard work but it may provide tips for others. For example how to store root veg, dry beans or keep your nuts safe.
Store room veg
Store room fruit.
The Chutney shelf
The Jam room
The "charcuterie" room. Best Salami ?!?

I agree that we should definitely expand the photo compotions.

Cheers Martin

I liked the two / four shows going on at the same time, have one where you are asking which one is the best ( for a small prize if possible) ie hen / cockerel / pig / ewe / tup /cow / dog/cake / craft  etc and a second themed more fun one ie Christmas / Easter/ snow /rain / sun  / best horns / ugliest face / prettiest face etc. This month i suspect there will be plenty people who perhaps don't have goats, who would have liked to have been entering as well as voting ( lots of competitive :trophy: people on here )
Good fun though
Also don't know if the pictures apart from the winner are in any particular order but if not then perhaps a 1st - 3rd would be in order ( not everyone can be a winner)

Of course I'd love to show off my ducks  ;D , the cat would not win me any price  ::)
Foodstuffs might be difficult on-line, how and who would judge the taste of baking, chutneys, jams, etc??? :&>

Great stuff, keep them coming. Like the reclaimed / recycled idea, pure photo comps like best landscape, crafts, stores  - all will feature over the coming year.

For food shows you'll have to post me a sample for tasting and judging.  :D

We do plan to have some classes which are judged by an 'expert' judge, and not based on member votes - how does that sound?

We also have plans for classes with a small entry fee (£1 probably) to cover prizes and postage - would this put you off entering, or encourage you?

This month i suspect there will be plenty people who perhaps don't have goats, who would have liked to have been entering as well as voting ( lots of competitive :trophy: people on here )

That's what I had in mind. A show for livestock plus one for non-livestock, for exactly the reasons you've mentioned.

They are in order, positions will be shown from tomorrow morning when we upgrade the scripts a bit.   :)

looking forward to animals and non-animals - the 'how cheap can you get' is a great idea - although I think some of our timber has seen several different homes and purposes!!

Well done everyone - especially the winning owners and animals,

Well done to Dan  :trophy: for his programming/computer skills and for taking on the task of organising even more shows - I for one wouldn't mind the entry fee, though I'm only a point and squirt photographer :dunce: :dunce:

Hi Dan
..just been looking at the update of 2011 online show -got me smiling again :)

I LIKE the way we can see the runners up now - it would be nice to keep it all fairly light hearted and fun.

I just enjoyed taking part - Thankyou.

Had another idea. Happy families -livestock with offspring. Got to be worth it for the ooo's and ahhh's. Father in the shot may not be practical though?

Just a few ;) more suggestions Dan...

"other" poultry?     ducks, turkeys, quail, partridges in pear trees?!

"in a previous life...." to show & describe (briefly!) the reclaimed/recycled stuff we are all so good at

"dirty dog!"

"At work / at rest / at play"

"Show-stoppers"

"Wild life"

"small but perfectly formed" Versus "big and ... beautiful!"

And, having just been outside ... "My mud is muddier than your mud!"  (bet there's lots of pig shots in this one!)

Sounds like a great idea. Like the idea of animal specific groups and general groups. Willing  to pay and donate to charity. Some suggestions for general categories for the individual to interpret as they wish

Farmlife
Early morning
Harvest time
Kitchen Garden
Working on the Land
Country life
Bedtime
Arrival of spring
Winter chores
The farmyard
Work in progress
Sunny days
The simple life
Feeding time
Hard at work
End of the day
Freshly picked
At play
Unusual pair
Friends
Big thanks to Dan for being prepared to organise it all. Lots of hard work I would imagine.

Well I am so surprised,I have just noticed my Bertie came 2nd- and one of my piggies came joint third! Thank you all whom voted-very pleased!-

Dan,Hows about when someone has winning livestock,1st,2nd,3rd all have rosettes or something(printed certificate with picture?!) :trophy: -I am so proud of Bertie!! ;D Obviously like you suggest all would pay an entrance fee-great idea that! BTW: Well done to the winners!

It would be nice to enter our chutneys and such, but whom would test them?(Dan would have shelves full of it all  ;D )

I also like the idea of recycled materials used for whatever purpose.
What about bright idea's?! - of items used in our smallholdings?

We're working on something along the rosette lines, will tell more in a week or so, should be ready for the current show results (and will be retro-fitted to the previous shows).

ooh, ohh, thought of some more!

"Peas in a pod" - as in livestock who look like twins, even if they're not  (no cheating... Plumseverywhere & my Toggie goats pose just the same!)

"snug as a bug" - probably more snuggly kittens than cattle... but who knows!

"men at work" - all the manly type jobs that take place; building, carrying, bricklaying ... done by whoever, not just the fellas!! ;)

"Rare breeds"  (might have to categorise this down abit?)

Dan, could the rosettes be added to our profiles? like the star (square!) system, under our usernames?

Not from here!!

Can I just say .... this competition is driving me crazy!
I'm not at all competative, but I KNOW my animals are the cutest, so should win!! ;) :D  And I'm having trouble choosing which photos do them justice!

I'm dreadfully competitive - try not to be in my older age and also with my animals rather my my previous sport, but it's still there - deep down - so sorry but mine are most definitely the cutest  ;) ;) :D :D

I have seen the dirty dog theme done on the Pointer forum and the results were an impressive collection of mudwumps - well worth doing.  Flying ears and smiling dogs also work pretty well.  Cute lambs in curious places is another though I would be so tempted to steal a friend's photo of an orphan lamb asleep in a dog feeding bowl (I won't I promise).

I think a sheep (or given the time if year some 'wittle wams'  ;)) class and a 'recycled' project - what you've made from other stuff or for a very low cost  ;) But then, I just need an excuse to get Bruce to finish sorting one of my many 'projects'  :D :D :D

Okay, we've settled the sheep classes and I'll get the show online tomorrow. We've gone for:

Cutest lamb (or wittle wam  ::) )
Most impressive horns
Wooliest sheep

We'll also have a Smallholding DIY show, suggestions for classes much appreciated.

And no, helping out won't prevent you from entering, unless you suggest a class for "best X owned by members with Beautiful South derived usernames"...  :D   (I've been listening to them all week since you mentioned it.)

There might be, if anyone can come up with some ideas (I've run out just now).

Any suggestions? Veg gardens should be bursting so maybe something around that? Plus a livestock show of some sort?

We really need an online show convenor! ;)
