OK, so having just joined the forum I would like to introduce myself - a lawyer, in south Bucks (not very glam), 9 acres, 5 children (under 9yrs), one mad spaniel and a tolerant husband. The plan: to introduce a few pigs, chickens and vegtables - (yes, an aspirational smallholder !). Leading to? Who knows but as long as it is fun, gets the children involved and fills the freezer I don't mind. We shall see but for the moment, why not? ;)

Welcome! and Bucks not glam?? ;D

Hi nice to hear from you. Will await with interest all your news.

Hi and welcome.
Five kids under 9 must be the equivalent of about 100 sheep! Sounds like you've got your hands full. Look forward to hearing about your adventures - more for the junior Forum, though.

Sally - where will you have the time to take on animals - 5 children under 9 - I can barely cope with one! GIVE THIS LADY A MEDAL!!!!
Welcome anyway and good luck with everything. Looking forward to hearing about your choices of breeds etc for your smallholding.

total respect sally. five under 9, a lawywer and smallholding. we have only one (6 year old) , my OH also is in the legal profession, but we would like an addittion before time runs out. she works really hard, long hours etc, but finds it difficult to join in and help me as she can't cope with the disorganised nature of things outdoors. she likes the end results, when placed on the table, but not how it got there. I think it is a lovely environment for kids, growing up around animals, it is healthy, both physically and mentally. I bet you rarely have time to sit and relax.

Well, you spotted the plan. I am hoping that the children will get involved (not that it will be optional you understand!) The chickens will be here at the end of Feb and Pigs by end of March! Raised vegetable beds are half way there. I think this is progress?! (naivety is bliss!)
