British minimum wage  and European maximum weekly hours Inspectorate

A man owned a small farm in Britain. The British Wage and Hour Dept. claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an official out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the rep.

“Well,” replied the farmer, “There’s my farm hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him £600 a week plus free room and board.

The farm secretary has been here for 18 months, and I pay her £500 per week plus free room and board.

Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about £10 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of whiskey every Saturday night.”

“That’s the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,” says the agent.

“That would be me,” replied the farmer.

I have run my own small business (a hotel) for almost 3 years now so work 7 days a week 49 weeks of the year. I always take 3 weeks off in January and escape to the sun! In the quieter months of the winter I work a minimum of 14 hours a day but in the summer it's easily 18 hours a day. In between these long hours I have to fit in the time to feed, clean and spend time with all the animals, this is my "escape".

Now I am not for a second complaining as I chose this life and absolutely love it and would not change it. It does give me a laugh however when I hear customers of mine moaning that they had to do half an hour overtime, once in a blue moon and I guess it's fair to say the youngsters moan the most! I have always been in the hotel trade so long days and hard work is the way I was brought up. I guess there are many of you good people that have the same commitments as me and just get on with it and never moan as you love it???
