Title: Feed costs - best deals
Post by: Tudful Tamworths on November 14, 2011, 12:15:33 pm
I'm currently shopping around for a better deal and wondered what other people were paying at the moment when buying in bulk - either bagged or loose, by the tonne.

I was told that a company called ACT (Agricultural Central Trading) was offering a tonne at £200 - which is £50 less than I'm paying BOCM Pauls per tonne of standard sow rolls. Unfortunately, they don't supply to Wales!

were currently paing 187 tonne for rolls and 28 / tonne for fodder beet.
rolls are from a merchant in cleobury, we buy a ton at a time. theyre glw which id not heard of before.
the rolled wheat we also mix in, we grew but cost 500£ for drilling and spraying etc, and we got 12 tonne of the field. we ploughed and harvested it.

ACT i think from memory you had to join them (like a shareholder) to get the benefit from them :farmer:

Can you tell me please Windymiller, is that for a tonne bulk bag or 25Kg sacks ?
GLW do look good, here's a link to their website http://www.glw-feeds.co.uk/Pigs.aspx (http://www.glw-feeds.co.uk/Pigs.aspx) might have to make an enquiry myself  ;)

I thought I was doing well getting a tonne (40 x 25Kg sacks) for £270 per tonne, delivered  :-\ Although I do only go through a tonne per month, so maybe I'm not bulk enough to qualify for extra discounts  ???

Liz - I was quoted £360 per tonne for BOCM Pauls, so £250 isn't that bad  ;)

Ahh the joys ! At least my Kunes are easier on the hard feed  ;D

thats a bulk bag, i think but will find out small bags, i think they do 20s, so 50 in a tone are about 6£.
we do get a decent discount as we get a tone a month.

Have you tried Wynnstay Group plc in Powys? Unfortunately I don't have their phone no but you should be able to find them via Google and they were very competitive.

I buy a tote bag weighing 600kg of pig meal from a place called Broadoak in Carmarthenshire for £140 ish.  They make it themselves and it's lovely stuff :) my pigs scoff the lot

Hi Miss Piggy.  The phone number for the guy is David Royal 07977 913469 and it's called and the best details i can find are http://food.zibb.co.uk/profile/hafod+water+ltd/gb/dyfed/llandeilo/sa19+7ae/34158931 (http://food.zibb.co.uk/profile/hafod+water+ltd/gb/dyfed/llandeilo/sa19+7ae/34158931) they are fab and they mix it themselves.  The do straights too and it's a lot cheaper.  It's really easy to find and if you get stuck let me know.

Not sure if this will work but this is where it is on google maps broadoak llandeilo - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=broadoak+llandeilo&hl=en&ll=51.896973,-4.058762&spn=0.002238,0.004823&sll=51.805108,-4.078731&sspn=0.009288,0.01929&vpsrc=6&hq=broadoak&hnear=Llandeilo,+Dyfed,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=18)

Sry to clog up the thread but i did this for local facebook friends.

Oats (bruised/rolled) 15kg £3.25 or 500kg £92.00

Barley 20kg £4.80 or 600kg £121.20

Soy Husks    25kg £5.75( he did explain the nutrition to me but i got confused)

Bailey course mix 20kg £6.40 or 500kg £142.95

Bailey pig meal 20kg £6.20 or 500kg £135.70

Hafod own pig meal 600kg £135.00

He did say that he is intending to mix his own equine course mix and that it'll probably be cheaper than the Baileys one.  He also said that he has ordered sugarbeat but doesn't know the prices yet and it is due in today in bulk :) Hope this helps

Hi Welshlass,  thanks so much for the information. Much appreciated, hoping to upload some pictures of the piggies in the next few days, they are doing a marvelous job of clearing a large bank of bracken and brambles.
They are rare breed welsh Pigs.  :pig:  :pig:

when comparing prices the big difference is the protein content the higher 22% will be dearer while 18% or 16% will be cheaper    the base price for feed wheat is £153 per ton with barley £155 per ton with regional variations                 soyameal is £272 per ton ex liverpool at 48% protein    bulk blower is the cheapest then ton bags  and 25 or 20 kilo bags the dearest  also if it has to go through a pelleter which adds to the cost
a lot of variables to factor in before a decision is made :farmer:

Miss Piggy if you go to see David and his family they can give you the nutirtion list that is in the meal.  They make it for a commercial/large pig farmer that is local to us.  I do have the list but it is on the bottom of a 600kg bag lol and i've not got the energy to dig it out.

They are very good at their job and have a regular nutritianist in to give advice about differenc feed stuffs

We never had these problems years ago. Father's pigs were fed "chats" (spuds too small to use or sell), skimmed milk and a thing called "balancer meal". I don't know what went into that but we always had fine pigs.

I've got an old chest freeser and some black bins that i fill up and then i've got an old caravan that i use to keep a tote bag that keeps the rest of it nice and dry.  It makes it worth while to buy in bulk :)

Hi Robert. I've since heard that it wasn't ACT that were doing the £200 deal, it was ABN - which I'm told used to be Dalgetty. Neither are names I'm familiar with, but will try and find out more.

ABN sounds familiar  i think they were the ones that gave a talk at an SAC meeting last year  it was a supplier to large scale pig farms
we use east coast vinners at drumlithie they go down as far as newcastle and Durham with pheasant food for the large estates  they also have a very large pig herd as well  :farmer:

HI guys, you guys across the water and up in Scotland are very lucky with your prices I am in North Somerset and a 25K bag of pig finisher from a country store will set you back £9.90, to buy in bulk is cheaper however, still only takes it down to £7.25 for a 25K bag if you buy it by the tonne. My pregnant sows still get sow nuts with the wheat and barley but all others are now on barley and wheat mixed with milk (my own) or yogurt and haylage, they are doing very well on it.

Doubt if this will make it any easier but they are meant to be running a ferry from down ur way somewhere to Swansea next year.  Not sure if it would work out any cheaper with fuel but thought it was worth a mention.

Hi Welshlass, thanks again for your reply, thats just what we plan to do, went down the tip but the chap wouldnt let us have old freezers, said because of gases in them etc they were not allowed to let them go once they come into tip. So unless i sit at gate and wait wont be able to get one that way! We are looking in local papers etc and recycle website. One will turn up I'm sure. We plan to decant from big tote bag into all saved old plastic feed bags and get a barn cat. At least we have somewhere dry its just making it vermin proof really. We have 5 pigs and may share some with a friend also so I expect they will soon get through 600kgs. Havnt yet sat down to calculate how long it will last.  :pig:

Try joining the local Freeecycle :) you'll be suprised how many are getting shot of them.  I've been told by horsey people that they use upright fridge-freezers to but they don't have the lids stay up like a chest.  I've never tried it but been told they work just as well.

Also there are facebook pages about that are for re-using items and wanted pages
