Title: Problem ram
Post by: nellie on March 06, 2009, 11:39:42 pm
hi

Our 3 year old ram has always be a bit aloof with us but fine with our ewes- up until this year

We bought our ewes down to lamb in the field nearest to the house ( as we have done each year) and kept the ram on his own for a few weeks. He was in the field next to our ewes so he wasnt isolated. We have followed this pattern each year, returning the ewes and lambs to the same field as the ram ater 3 weeks. However this year our ram has been harrassing the ewes and trying to mate with them

Is this normal and can we expect a second lambing as a result in the autumn.

I'm no expert but others are. He may be TRYING to mate, but it's unlikely that the ewes are in season. Are they standing for him? Might just be a dominance thing after a seperation?

hi the ewes are certainly not keen  >:(

he was so persistant with one  ( chasing her around the field so much that he put her off feeding her lamb) so we have had to seperate them to another field! He doesnt see interested in the others just this one particular one

it seemed unusual as he has never acted this way before
