Title: Mange or just dry skin?

Hi

Today I noticed one of my saddlebcak x GOS weaners looked a bit crusty around the neck.  Initially I thought that it had just got a bit muddy in one of the wallows that I created in the hot weather last week. (All my pigs are kep outdooors in Arcs and love the wallows!). However on closer inspection today, I thought that its neck looked a bit too crusted up  to be just mud and that on the back of its back legs it also looked a little dry and irritated/wrinkly.  I think it could be mange but there are no red spots or anything in the ears etc as it says in the book.  I checked all the other 11 and they seemd OK bar one which had a similar dry patch on its back legs.  They are about 12 weeks old and otherwise bright and feeding well like the others.  They are not itching mutch as far as I can see.   have now separated the two of them from the others as a precaution in one of my stables.

I have not had any new pigs  recently.  My most recent pig's are the weaners mother's who arrived nearly 18 mths ago.  They are GOS and have no sign of mange or dry patches etc.  None of my other pigs show any signs.  Could mange have been dormant for so long or can they catch it from wild animals? Perhaps it is something else?

I think that torrow I will try and take some scrapings to see if their are ay mites.

Can anyone suggest a worthwhile treatment feedor injection based treatment?

this is sunburn...... A dose of penicillin is a good idea as the skin is now pen for bugs to get it.  Some hand lotiion on their skin is a good idea also, or some mum to protect the damage skin.    The skin will get better with time.  The backs of the ears can also become crusty... Have some shade available and a good wallow.
