Title: emergency animal care
Post by: colliewoman on October 06, 2011, 08:53:29 pm

Hi all! Don't know if this is a good idea or not so delete if appropriate ;)

After reading mad goat woman's post (am i an addict) I thought perhaps we could maybe have a list of contacts who might be able to help out if needed in an emergency?

I'll go first.

Somerset, Glastonbury area.
I can care for;
sheep and lambs (and lambing)
goats and kids
beef cattle
alpacas
dogs
cats
all poultry
all small furries
could do pigs if instructions given.
hand milking no problems

pm me if required
 ;D

perhaps a certain mileage of your post code would be better? then someone needing help could put in a postcode and it comes up with list of people. id be up for this also .

I don't yet have any animals, apart from a cat, so won't be much use to anyone but I do like the idea. Once I have some experience under my belt I would certainly add my details.

I'm WR11 and can milk goats, basic sheep care, cats/dogs - rear newborns etc.  Grew up breeding German shepherds/shelties/maine coon cats so can offer help with whelping or handrearing.
Can't travel too far as also have 4 small children and disabled mum but certainly happy to help in the near vicinity (Katie and Jinglejoys! if you need me!!) xx

How about a 'help' map similar to the members one, Dan?

FK10 area - can travel up to 50 miles.  Dogs, cats, hens, ducks, kids (human ones), cleaning up after any of them too, but not hard physical stuff as I'm an OAP!  ;D ;D ;D

Brilliant idea I reckon.

Pembrokeshire Carms borders SA34.

Experience in sheep, dogs, beef cattle, horses and alpaca.  Also have a professional small flock shepherd living in a cottage here who is willing to help.

a satellite map would be good idea as plums said as then you can just look where you are and see oh  so&so is near by they could/might help out  then the only problem  would be is  this goingto be on a favour basis as in are people going to ask for money to come and help or certain amount to cover fuel ?

As far as I am concerned I wouldn't want payment as I'd have to pay tax on it - a jar of home made jam or chutney would be plenty reward for helping out a friend in need.

who mentioned money? i for one would hope that the favour would be returned for emergency care as this was supposed to be.

This should be excersise that is good for relationships and food for the soul not a cash cow.

I will now get down from my soap box

Ellisr,
I agree with you that this shouldn't be about money.

I think the intention of the original mail was about being good neighbours in times of emergency. I hope I never need to call on the services but it would be good to know there was someone out there if I were in dire straits.

i did mean favour, not money. however should i be called upon to help out, if perchance there was a fry's turkish delight left in a feed bin........ ;D
no, no money or payment. there are plenty of peeps out there who do that anyway, but it's sods law that when (past experience here) your appendix burst and your friends have run for the hills, you are also skint at the same time. that way everyone can ask for help and not feel as though they have to find payment.

CA8, usually busy on our own farm but would help out with hand-milking a cow if anyone was stuck, and would always be happy to show anyone what to do (and/or do my best to answer any questions to do with) dogs, cats, sheep, chickens, ponies, cattle, ducks, pigs.  I also have two working collies if anyone needed help moving sheep.

The most important thing for any of us might be to make sure our families know how to get on TAS to rustle up both the local helpers and the virtual ones!

DL6 TS9 TS15 areas as we're right on the boundary of all 3 areas, don't you just love maps!

Pretty busy with my own smallholding but can help with advice on pigs, can do feeding & watering but bad back stops any heavy work, can do dog sitting/walking, run errands, make T & beds, send in food parcels & hoover. Can do children if pushed i have a great set of colouring books and i'm a dab hand at Snap!

Yes, that's definitely possible. The first step is to formalise your profiles so you can add your postcodes, and add the ability to indicate that you want to take part in this and what help and support you can offer. Then we can map it.

ETA for extended user profiles is end of the year (this includes things like bookmarks and notifications), so just keep this thread going for now.

FK1

Cats, Dogs, small pet furries, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs (no experience with breeding though), goats & sheep.
Could probably manage cattle (can hand milk). Can help with horses- though not with exercising, but can feed, water, muck out, deal with farriers etc.

I refuse to look after pet spiders, and would be reluctant to go into your house if you had such things!
