Title: Help - Looking for Small Breed Girl
Post by: Eeyore on September 26, 2011, 02:05:52 pm
It's a bit of a long story but I will try to keep it short.  Firstly I live in Aberdeenshire.

We lost our beautiful rescue westie girl in May this year to cancer.  Her friend / companion (our rescue scottie boy) has gone through a period of grieving and although he is better he is still down.  I know it can take a long time for the grieving to ease (I know), but I have a friend with a little dog and when we go to visit he just seems to be so happy and like he used to be.

Ideally we are looking for an adult dog of a similar size to a scottie, e.g. a westie, yorkie etc. Breed is not important, just that it is a girl and she likes boy dogs.  We prefre to rehome rescue dogs as I feel they are in more need of a home and our money goes to a good cause.  However we are prepared to pay for the right girl.

We would give the dog a 100% loving home - get on the sofa etc and we have no probs providing vet references etc.  We have no intention in breeding or showing so breed / pappers is not important.

I have decided to advertise as our little boy has health issues (before we rescued him) and I feel they are being made worse due to his sadness and I feel the sooner we find him a friend / companion the better he will feel.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Thank you all soo much for your kind messages.

I am very frustrated as I have found a couple of dog rescue places down south, one in Derbyshire and the other in Kent and they are full of little doggies that I would love to give a home to.  I enquired about one girl in particular about a month ago and I never got a response.  The sad thing is the dog is still looking for a home.

Oh that's me moaning again.

Thank you all.

Alice, I don't know if you've been checking the Dogs' Trust in Glasgow but on the internet at the moment they have a deaf female Jack Russell needing an experienced home - maybe she is quite unsuitable (it doesn't say how she is with other dogs, for instance) but it might be worth asking the question:

Hi SallyintNorth,  my friend had a beautiful jackrussel girl needing a home but she wanted to eat our parrot and the bunnies outside.  So unfortunately we had to give her back.  I didn't feel right telling her off as it is her instinct.  Therefore we are kind of looking for a dog with less "terrier" instincts if you know what I mean.

I check all the rescue centres websites twice a day and have been doing this for about 2 months now.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look for me and email.

Not a lot of use, I dare say, you being all the way up there and me being all the way down here but I have a Yorkie boy  (not castrated) who came to me to be re-homed. I thought at first I may have to have him P.T.S. for his own good as he was in such a state and I couldn't get him to eat or drink or even to respond to me. If I picked him up he went as stiff as a board and either looked past or through me.
He has come round, though and is eating well and greeting people when they come in, though he is still very head shy and nervous.
However, no use to you as you would prefer a bitch but anyone who can offer a kind, understanding home to an eleven year old special needs Yorkie, please get in touch.
To be honest I expect he will join my throng of "little old men"
Good luck in your search, there are a LOT of little dogs out there desparate for a good home.

Hi Sylvia, I take my hat off to you for taking in a dog with problems - all of which I can imagine have been caused by humans.

My heart breaks when I hear of animals being abused / neglected.  This little man has obviously had a hard long life and thank goodness there are loving people out there that can provide a loving home (even if it is temporary) to such a deserving dog.

Our wee Scottie is entire also and as much as I would love to give your little dog a home I know it wouldn't be fare on our Scottie.  I am not a dog expert but have been advised that another entire dog would be a no go.  We have found that he prefers girl dogs as friends and that is why we are looking for a girl - his choice.

I hope you find your little dog a forever home (if you don't keep him yourself).

SUCCESS!!  I managed to find a lovely scottie girl.  She is settling in great - even though it's only been a day.   I actually think she is a cross scottie as she is bigger than my westie girl was, and she is a woolly mamoth.  She had a bath last night and was very good considering and today the clippers are coming out.  I think she will feel better once she is rid of all the hair as she pants alot and I think she is overheating - even in our cold farmhouse.

I will post pics when I get them.  I have taken pics of her now and I will take some of her after her clip.

Thank you all for your kind messages and support in helping me find a friend for our little boy.

Day 2 for Molly in her new home.  As we got her on Friday afternoon we haven't had her at the vets yet.  I am not very confident about the seller being genuine.  We don't know much about her and he couldn't find her vaccination book.  She is supposed to be between 2 & 3 years but acts like a puppy.  She is hyperactive and wants to play all the time and leeps from sofa  to sofa.  Rory (our scottie boy) isn't amused as he is so laid back and slow.

As for the pics after the clip - well she is terrified of the clippers and I managed to do a little - then got bit.  I haven't tried again but I am a bit concerned when I take her to the vet she looks daft - her back and the base of her tail is clipped - therefore she looks like a black lion at the minute.  I usually clip my dogs myself but I think I will try to find someone who is more experienced with this type of dog.  She is soo wooly (I don't think she has ever been clipped) and she was/is scratching - which I feel is due to being over warm.  We bathed her with a flea shampoo just incase.

I am not sure she is the ideal friend for Rory and to be honest I think you don't know unless you give them a try.  I won't be calling the seller to see if he wants her back as I wasn't over excited about where she lived.  From some of her reactions she gives me the impression she has been struck around the head.

She is a lovely girl and desperate to please.  Very quick at learning, but she is like a shadow as she follows us everywhere.  I haven't left her and Rory in the house on their own yet - will maybe start to do this gradually.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Molly and Rory that your new girl settles down as she gets used to you.

I got a rescue collie x gsd from the RSPCA once; got him home and he ran right around the bungalow (all around the outside) then did it again ... and again ... and again ... I think he might still be doing it but then one of the cats appeared so he diverted to chase it under the car...  It wasn't looking good, frankly.  Then we couldn't leave him on his own (he had another dog and two cats for company) as he had seperation anxiety...  A few months on and he was the loveliest, lovingest, happiest, most laid back dog you could ever wish to meet, an absolute pleasure to own.

Thank you very much for your support and kind messages.

Well we went to a lovely dog groomer this morning.  To cut a long story short she got a wee bit stressed and therefore we are going back tomorrow to hopefully finish the trim.  The dog groomer thought she was a lovely dog and like myself feels she is very young.  She just needs to build on her confidence.

She is off to the vet tomorrow afternoon to get checked over so hopefully everything will be fine.

We rescued a corgi x.   he was so screwed up bless him, turned out to be a hermaphrodite had boy and girl bits! so the vet made him into a girl cause his boy bits didn't work properly. He had been badly treated and shut up a lot in a shed, terrified if you picked up a stick or newspaper. It took alot of patience but he turned out to be such a rewarding dog in so many ways.
Please don't let her go back to her former owner, i'm sure she will settle down or you may be able to find her a loving home.

Hi feldar, I hate to hear of stories where dogs have been mistreated and abused.  This wee girl has certainly been whacked across the head - even the dog groomer felt this.

She is never going back to where we got her.  This is day 4 and she has such a lovly character and seems to be soo happy.  She seems to see me as her guardian already.  She needs alot of guidance and I am not sure I am knowledgeable enough to train her correctly.  All I know is positive re-inforcement, e.g. rewarding positive and correct behaviour.

I am very focused on our wee boy and how he is feeling.  At the moment he is keeping out of Molly's way - he is used to a very quiet life and takes things at a very slow pace - the opposite to Molly.  I am just a bit worried about Rory's feelings and he gets poorly through stress.

Anyway one day at a time.

That's good, it looks like she has a wonderful new home with you.
Why do people have these animals if all they want to do is mistreat them? i will never fathom it. I don't understand some people and i never will !!

I totally agree feldar,  I don't understand either.  I have my faults too - in the other way.  I find myself loving them too much and treating them like babies.  My westie girl was a breeders bitch and was kept in a shed all her breeding life.  Saddly we only had the privilige of her for 3 years when she got cancer and we had to get her pts.  But the whole time she lived with us she slept on the sofa and because our house is drafty I would put a blanket over her, gave her a pillow for her head and I know she appreciated it - her eyes told me.  I bought her a fleecy jumper to wear in the winter and would give her a hot water bottle at night when it was very cold.

I can't help but love every animal - I believe they are as equal as humans and deserve to be treated as we would like to be treated.

Didn't get Molly to the vets today as scheduled but she is back at the groomers to get her trim finished (hopefully).  Hope to get her to the vets before the end of the week.  Will let you know how we get on.

We have 3 rescues from a local centre 'Many Tears' I know they are in West Wales, but they have fosterers in Scotland, so worth checking the web site. You can visit the dog in the foster home and see if they suit your wee lad.
They deal a lot with ex puppy farm animals, and these do so deserve a safe loving home.

Check out the web site.
