Title: Hello fellow smallholders
Post by: orson cart on October 22, 2007, 07:27:15 pm
Firstly congratulations on a very informative and interesting web site. I’m Tony and along with my wife Deborah are moving from the City of Newcastle to the countryside of Cumbria. We have bought a small cottage with 3 acres of land and would like to achieve some sort of return from the land. We have not decided on what to grow or keep just yet, nothing too labour intensive as we both work full time. Chickens, Bees, Greenhouse and vegetable plot are top of our agenda at the moment. Through these pages I am sure we will find the information and help we will need to become self sufficient (ish) smallholders. Hopefully in a few years we will be in a position to contribute to the forum and offer some help.

Thank you.

Tony and Debs.

Pigs can be kept quite reasonably on a fair sized area they wont need too much work.  Feed twice a day, fill up the water and add straw.  Keep for 6 months, then eat.

I'd second this - weaner pigs are less work than poultry.

I giggled at "orson cart" - welcome to the smallholders club - we're all in the poo together!

You know, Dan didn't get "orson cart" - he thought it was a real name. For a smart guy, he's sometimes a bit slow...
